THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. "_ NBVADA CITY, CAL. Peo Businoos, ‘Manager. LBONARD 8. GALKINS.....(..Editor’ ~ Nevada County Oficial Press. FRIDAY, FEB. 9. THE YIELD OF GoLD. The most reliable statistics obtainable (and they are doubtless approximately correct, although falling short of rather than exceeding the actual yield,) show that from 1848 to the present time the gold mines of this State have produced $1, 138,500,000, the figures for the various years being as follows: ah : $10,000,000 40,000,000 50,000,000 . 65,000,000 60,000,000 65,000,000 60,000,000 55,000,000 55,000,000 55,000,000 50,000,000 PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATIONS. Superintendent Williams of ‘the Spring Va'ley hydraulic mins in Butte county informs.the Alta-thar line of their tailing canals, are. making contract, with the company fo: . ten years, to allow the sedimentladen ‘water coming from their mine, . . containing the slickens and -fine de__bris from it, to flow upon their cold . : adobe land; i in some instances to be used for filling up low places, and in others ta be spread broadcast over the land, to enrich and improve it.” Again, at a trial recently had for the possession of land on the north side of American river belonging to J. B. Haggin of San Francisco, after show“ing that the property in dispute: was. ___ bottom ‘land that was frequently * odvered with mining debris during . ‘ high water, ‘‘Haggin’s agent testified that it would rent for $125. per acre. per year, During the trial, witnesses from Yolo county also gave testimony as to the great value of such land. It is especially adapted for hop-raising, and readily brings from $20 per acre per year to much larger prices,” eommeneesensteecemae ed Lorrm Rama attempted Tuesday to kill Lieutenant Geo. E. B. Hart of the Twenty-second N. Y. Regiment. When they met she drew a revolver and fired. He turn. ed atid ran, and she followed, discharging the four remaining cartridges as fast as peasible. She was __arrésted, and gave her age as 19. The past summer, when the reyiment returned from the encampment, * the woman fell in love with a member whose name she refused to give, He accomplished her ruin-and “deserted her. Hart, whom she had known from childhood, besought her to live with him, and she did so till~ about two weeks ago, when he too deserted. her. Ar San Jose Tuesday Mrs. Teresa Young, aged 45, was fatally burned. Her screams aroused Mrs. Slaven, "living in the same house, and enterfound her lying on the floor by the stove with the whole front of her body to the hips a mass of roasted flesh. Her husband was discovered in the bedroom drunk, ‘The fire originated in the bedroom closet, but how is a mystery. On Sunday morning John May, a well known quartz operator of Greenville, Plumas county, fell from his chair dead while eating his breakfast at the _— Hotel. May was a native of England, but an old Ualifornian, and has been a mining partner with Thomas Treleaven for many years. Heé’was a man of considerable means. teamsters, named Archie Harper and Joe Lyons, engaged in a shooting affray in front of the Dallas Saloon. Ten or eleven shots were fired. Lyons was shot in the breast and is not expected to live: He has a wife and two young children. Harper was arrested and lodged in jail. J.B. Wirginis City Enterprise.) ‘Over in the cow counties of California they are always howling about ‘thieving mining ‘opérations—just as though there were not dishonest men in all businesses and professions, from the savers of sinners to the bhief-catchers—and many’ and Jond have been'the warnings of the papers of Sacramento, Marysville, und other towns in the ranching regions, against mining enterprises of all kinds, Judging from the preachings of , these papers one would be led ti believe that the growers of sgricultuial products, and the dealers in the same, were the only honest men in the world. In view of all that has been said by these ‘papers, it is not a little amusing to learn that cit izens of Marysville have been victimized to the tane of over »$20,000 by the firm of Kendall & Co., Chicago ‘‘bucket-shop” dealers (or pre. tenided dealers) in grain. They led their California ‘‘slickens” gudgeons along nicely, In getting $10 or $15. as dividends on $50 or $100 sent on to Kendall & Co., the Granzers concluded they had struck a big. thing. Men who-would not look “at” mining stocks ‘let neighbor after neighbor into the secret of\ speculating “in ;. grain by the “mutual \plan,” through 000 . The ranchmen iu general do not like\ to talk about the matter, but one \man is ooo . “ad enough” to’ give his ‘experience, which was-as follows ; He forwarded $50 and received remittances of $15 or $20 as” dividends, Think‘ing he had struck a good thing, . he sent Kendall & Co. $190 more, mak’. ing capital of $240 in all, with inany: more dividends until further orders, but to let the dividends .accnmulate and add them to his capital as fast as they _acerued, His divia considerable time to come, <i oe A Miner’s Mishap. » The Tidings says: Wednesday wnorning Wm. Hamill was very severely hurt while working in the 1200 level of the Idaho mine, Hamillistimber-man in the mine, and was engaged in putting in a hitch for a timber, when a large rock fell and caught him on the small of the back, very badly crushing him, The shock tohbis system was very .severe. The tissues about the ‘pelvis are badly torn, but it is supposed that-the spine is not—injured, ~An opinion as to the results of the hurt cannot yet be formed. Hamill is a very experienced man in his business, and is usually cautious. Me had been warned a-few minutes before he was hurt this time to, look out for the ground, and ‘then he sounded it and pronounced it safe and went on with bis work until the rock fell. The, rock that struck Hamill weighs, it is said, over five hundred pounds; A wet known business man of Stockton called on John Jackson, the hardware man, a day or two ago, on a matter of business. ‘Phe conference not resulting satisfactorily, the business man lost his temper and exclaimed: ‘‘You can go to h——1! !” ‘“What!”’shrieked Mr, Jackson, ‘‘such language from ‘you; and you a ‘member of the church!” ‘‘The ehurch be d d! Tm not talking church now; I'm talking business.” dt.
