Two peddlers were arrested at
Grass Valley Wednesday evehing
for selling silks without a county
license, and bound over to be
tried yesterday afternoon. District Atterney Long went down to
look after the case. The peddlers
obtained a license the day of their
arrest, but whether they were too
late in doing so remains to be seen.

AURIFEROUS GRAVEL. ~~
Enough in Nevada County to
Keep the Hydraulicers Going
Fifty Years. :
The Mining Press says: The
ordinary yield of the gravel cLannels in the northern counties of
this State is from $40,000 to $50,000 per acre, though there are exceptional instances of much great‘er production—in one case at
French Corral, this county, reaching nearly $200,000. In the southern counties the gravel deposits
are not so deep and the product
has varied from $10,000 to $40,000
per acre. It has: been estimated
that it would take 50.years to work
out ground already opened and
controlled by the present canals
and resetvoirs, providing hydraulic mining had not been prohibited
by the courts. It was judicially
found in the. Woodruff case, in
which only the mining region’ on
the tributaries of the Yubu was
considered (although the princi=
ple affected all hydraulic mining),
that ‘‘approximately, according
to the evidence, over 100,000,000
cubic yards from these mines had
been washed out by the, hydraulic
process,” and 700,000,090 cubic
yards remain to be washed out.
The basis of valuation of hydraulic ground predicated on returns per cubic yard has long been
obsolete. The measure of value
is the product per miner’s inch of
water ; this in some instances has
reached as high as 41 per inch.
The effective results of water on
hydraulic banks, determined by
close observation in 1883 at several leading mines, is thus tabulated
by Walter A. Skidmore, Secretary
of the: Miners Association :
Mine Water. Earth Moved.
Miner's in. Cubic yds.
N. Bloomfield. 2,800 11,200
MUUON ogc yseis 3,300 11,400
MOGA..-.+-+ 1,500 7,500
Conly & Gowell 1,700 10,200
Excelsior... 1,600 6,400
Chadwick &
Campbell... 1,200 14,400
These observations Mr. Skidmore says were made simultaneously, but the conditions were
varying with respect to the consistency of the gravel. The result
will show a duty of an average of
five cubic yards per miner’s inch
in Nevada county, though this
would include some top dirt.
Land Case Hecided.
In-the case of the United States
vs. Mrs. Ella M.: Rose, of this
city, whois charged with having
fraudulently obtained a patent to
certain lands situated near Town
falk in this township, Judge Lorenzo Sawyer of the U.S, Circuit
Court has recently rendered a decision overruling the demurrer of
defendant to the bill of complaint.
The action was begun in January,
1884. The Court holds that where
a patent has been fraudulently obtained the United States can
maintain an action to vacate the
patent on account of such fraud.
[he defendant was given leave to
answer to the bill on or before the
rule-day in August, which is the
first Monday of that month. The
ruling of the Court in this case is
based upon the authority of.a decision in the United States Supreme Court recently rendered in
United States vs. Minor, reference
to which was had in these columns at the time.

The Arrival Today of Barrett's
Mammoth Raltlroad Shows.
There will be an old-fashioned
awakening in Nevada City today,
owing to the coming of Barrett’s
tented show. It is unquestionably the most stupendous railroad
menagerie and circus ever organized in America, and can lay
faif claim to the title of ‘‘Universal Living Exposition.” That it
is vast andinviting beyond precedent, and fully and fairly up to
its advertisements, is. amply
vouched for ‘by ths hearty encomiums of both the press and
public wherever its canopied won-’
der land has halted, and that it
will many times repay the expense and trouble of a visit is
equally certain. We need not
now recapitulate the many genuinely rare and exclusive features
it has collected from every climate
at fabulous cost, and alone presents. From the only _ living
White Nile Hippopotamus. to the
only living pair of coal black. African tigers, they have been more
talked about than the great ship
canal, and any one of at least a
baker’s dozen of them is a first
class show alone; while in the
splendid and varied street parade
will be seen a free display to dagzle and delight the wonder-roundedeye. It is a truly great and
most liberally and carefully managed exhibition, which all can
eo.sistently: patronize, with both
profit and. pleasure.
‘The parade will commend itself
to all lovers of the attractive in
spectacular effects. It amounts
to almost a certainty that the surrounding population will avail itself of the privilege and be in town
at an early hour, so as not to
miss-the procession and the menagerie of wild beasts in open
dens in the street.

Coal Miners in Court.
Henry Roberts, by ‘his attorneys, Messrs. Caldwell & Buckley
ofthis city, yesterday began suit
in the Superior Court ~ against ~R.
Dunsmuir & Sons, of San Francisco, who are described as being
in coal mining in various parts of
the coast, to recover $21,200 for
injuries he received on June 30th,
1884, bya gas.explosion.that occurred in one of their mines where
he was working, and which injuries have permanently disabled
him from work.
Mrs. Hannah Hosking and other heirs of Christopher Hosking,
deceased, bring suit by the same
attorneys against Dunsmuir &
Sons to recover $50,000 damages
that they claim to have sustained
by the death of said Christopher
Hocking from injuries received at
at the same time and place that
Roberts was hurt.

success was again manifested last
Saturday by a very large and enthusiastic audience: "To witnessan opera by adult artists is no

we see forty little prodigies, none

good many not over seven, act
and sing a difficult work almost
to perfection, it issimply wonderful, and makes an impression
