COLLINS’ REQUEST.
A Condemned Murderer Who Wants
No Assistance in Finding God.
Yesterday morning as Jailor Carter was preparing a bath for Collias,'who is sntenced to be»hung
February first for the murder of
Wn. F. Cummings in 1879, the prisoner said to him : ‘Tell the Sheriff [
don’t want a priest to hold mass that

there. -I can find.my own God, and
He'll be just as good a one as any
priest can find for me. I have faced
death a hundred times, and I can
meet it like a man in any shape it
comes, Now don’t forget to tell the
Sheriff about the priest.” Collins
seems to have given up ,all hope of
an extension of life after the day set
for hanging.

from Sacramento some years ago after helping Troy Dye and another
man to kill Tully. Timothy Lee, a
“Deputy Sheriff from Sacramento,

night : When the company left San

they made a contract with Mr, Donaldson, .general. bagguge manager,
for 300 pounds extra baggage, which
did not’expire until the 15th of this
month. This contract was -recognized by all the agents where the
arrived at Dutch Flat, Monday evening, when Manager Mott went to
check his baggage to Triickee, the
agent objecting on account of overweight. Hot words followed on
both sides, when the agent suddenly
and without any warning, strack
Mr. Mott, over the head with a lantern, and knocked him seriseless for
