Geahger . NEVADA.CITY, CALIFORNIA, = LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. . , THE CHINESE CASES.—The several Chinese cases tried im our local Courts during the past week seem to show the utter impossibility of getting at the truth. The Chinese companies have a power over their members which is superior to the terrors of law-or the-sanctity of an oath, and which is absolute: * In_a case recently tried, after the ar. §¥Staining tonic, and antidote to the un-! “yest was made, the matter was decided-bythe Chinese conipany, and an edict passed that’all ‘costs should be he-was so place ~~ paid by Pre rosecuting Witness, and in terror by threats ——that-he-dare not testify to the. truth, The defendant was convicted, and the prosecuting witness was compelled to pay his fine__In this_manner,-by—the-] interference of corporations the Courts are delayed, and in very many instances justice is thwarted. Some vigorous measures should be adopted to prevent the intimidation ot witnesses, and break up this interference of organizations with the business of Courts. THE Rain Prospect.—There is no probabllity that the present season will be one of-famine. ‘The Tain fall, last season was up to the average, and. this year it has equalled last, thus far, as shown by the records kept at the office The total rain fall last season was 56:69 inches, and the fall up to January 15th, for that season was 21:14 inches, Yesterday morning the total fall for the present seaSon amounted to 20:37 inches: There is certainly no cause for alarm “either at the ‘prospective loss of crops’ or.prostration of mining industry. The }. crops were very large last. season, and there is plenty of growing time yet, if the raia should be as abundant as last year. The. rain fall from the present storm was 4:25 inches up to yesterday morning. ; PROGRAMME oF EXERCISES.—The . following is the programme of exercises .for the Nevada Literary Society to-morrow. evening: 1st music, 2d reading: minutes, 3d miscellaneous business, 4th declamation by Henry Duffy, 5th reading selection by Mrs,-Dr. Chapman, 6th. music, 7th essay by 8S. M. Hinds, 8th . liseussion..of. thefollowing question : Resolved, that love is a greater incentive to action than. ambition. Affirmative, J. A. Palmer, J. E. Brown, Niles Searls. Negative, M. Cannon, J. B. Drummond, L. W. Williams. ~ Mintne Location.—J. H. Reader. et als have located fourteen mining claims of sixty by one hundred and twen*y feet each, at French Corral, Bridgeport township, commencing at-astake standing in the lower part of the flat below the Allison Ranch House, on a line of claims located two years ago by Stevens, Helm & Co.,-and extending along the east line of said claims 2,240 feet, thence at right angles 80 feet in an easterly direction, including the ground in the angle. ARREST AND RECOVERY OF STOLEN Goops.—Some three weeks ago, Novitzky & Co. lost a piece ‘ot water proof bth. Yesterday Marshal Cornell and Officer Dawley found the goods ina Chinese tailor shop. © The stuff was cut into suits, and the tailor was making it up. The boss tailor and two ‘men were arrested on the charge of stealing the cloth. VALUABLE Dog KILLED.—A valuable trained dog, owned by the Gregory troupe, was killed yesterday morping on the road from Grass Valley to thiscity. While the wagon was in . motion he jumped out and the wheels . passed over him, killing him instantly. He was a French poodle, well trained, and valued at $500 by the troupe: Saver Kraut,—Baltz & Gunther have a fine lot of new sauer kraut mabufactured by themselves. It is said to be excellent by those who have tried it. i oe No Mar.—No “Bastern: mail or Express arrived in: this city yesterday un til evening. The cars did net get_in ᠀漀渀 time” and the connection was not « & i ! ~ Whisit 18 Cttthbers day Ge Hoe) i tetter’s Stomach Bitters. i During the géason whem ‘the Gold Harvest! is generally suspended, and the reapers of the gilttering crop seek: the citiestto enjaly, Conviviality ‘among this enterprising and hard working elags; dat dram-drinking is not carried to the excess that it was some years ago. This may fairly be atiributed to the growing distaste for raw Spirits engendered by the use of HOSTETTKR’S S'TOMACH BITTERS. This famous stomachit is in universal favor with the miners. They take it with them to the interior, and use it regularly not asa beverage, but aé a strengthphealthy tiflvences to_which they are exposed . m the ‘localities wheré they labor ; and on “returning to the cities and towns, they find in its refreshing and invigorating properties the best safe guard, not only against the Diseaszs, but against the Dissipation of G:owded communities. It is one of the peculiarities of the preparation that-it is an ANTIDOTE TO INEBRIETY, Those who take ‘it as an appetizer and-invigorant,-averthat they have no desire . whatever for liquor of-any description, and, whatever fanatics may think to the contrary, HOSTETTER’S BITTERS is a powerful ally of the temperance cause. It. is because unmedicated alcohol weakens the stomach and the nervous system ‘by #t reaction, that it begets a craving for itself, It excites, and when the excitement passes. off, debility @nsues, and more, fuel is needed. to renew the artifi. cial fire that has, soto speak, burnt itself out. But the effect of the great vegetable tonic and altcrative is to invigorate the system perma nently and healtfully, YOUNG MEN'S SOCIAL CLUB. P @) THE FIRST PARTY oF THE SEASON!
