Judges, even of the Federal Court,

even denounced, . We, donot think
the, Judges: of “inferior Coarts are

surrotnd a king,” and propose to exercise our. tive; even at thie
risk of the displeasure of the Bee.
It is not true as alleged by the Bee
“that “Judge Sawyer heard “all the
evidence in the nase.” On the contrary, he did not a-word of it, .
the testimony all befny taken before
examiners, and it is hard tosuppose
that he read the 12,000 pages of
printed testimony. In our opinion
-—-he-coyld not have done_so and digested the testimony inthe brief. period between the subntission of the
ease and the rendition of his opinion,
He undoubtedly read portions of the
testimony, but ‘probably overlooked
that portion to which we called attention in our issue of “the 11th in‘Goopwin SmirH lectured to the
Torontoans the other night’ on ‘‘Political Satire,” and, among other good
things, ssid that George HI, might
“have madé a worthy farmer, and he)
queried whether George IV might
not have done better if he had been
allowed to retain Mra, Fitzherbert,
whom he really loved, and who was
worthy of love, ioatead of being compelled by nécessity of state to marry
a woman whom he had never. before

him oall for brandy. —
Treas are lots of good people in
this world who think gambling an
unpardonable sin, and who would
never take a hand inva quiet game of
euchre, or bet a cookie on a game of
checkers, but who see nothing incodnsistent jn going into an insurance of:
fice and betting the insurance company $50 against $5000 tht they. will
not die nor their house burn down
within a year.
A writer of mathematical bent
finds from the census. returns that
there are about 17,000 dentists in
the United States, who, he coutinues,
“pack into the teeth of the American
people a ton of pure gold annually.
Continuing his speculations, he predicts that in the twenty-first century
ali the gold in the country will be
buried in the graveyards.

‘the Commission daring 1894, Com‘missioner Redding opposed ‘the molate keeper, J. A. Richardson, to
‘prove its-inconvenience, the absence
of sufficient water, etc.
Messrs. Dibble ani Buckingham
spoke m complimentary terms of the
Shebley hatchery, and the work,
which had been accomplished there.
Finally the motion was put to a vote
and carried, Mr. Redding voting no.
President Buckingham made a motion that the hatchery remain under
the supervision of Judge Dibble as
heretofore. Commissioner Redding
moved to amend by substituting that
when Jadge Dibble had filed a stisfactory account of the financial transactions connected with the Shébley
hatchery, he be empowered to continue its management, The gentleman from Nevada did not relish this
endment, and he arose and rather
beatediy remarked that he knew that
Mr. Redding was not satisied wit.
the manner in which the affairs of
the present Commission were conducted, but that'so far as he was
concerned he did not care a snap.
He said that the affairs of the Shebfey hatchery had-been-in--charge of
J. A. Richardson—a cousin of Mr,
Redding, and recommended by him
for the podsition—an the items of
expense were in the hands of the
Commission and open to inspection
by all. He thep paid hia respects to
the old Commission, and, whilst disclaiming any intentiov-to belittle the
record of-the old Board, he compared
the resulta of its works with those of
the present Commission to the benefit of the latter. Mr. Redding replied with_-much— feeling that he
late B. B. Redding) whovhad. given
for 12 years a great deal of his time
and attention to watching over and
fostering the fish interests ‘of the
State. He had done it quietly ard:
unostentatiously, but how well he
had performed his.work waa known
by the peop'e of the State, and he
needed no eulogium, aud deserved
no condemnation from~any man.
Mr, Dibble said he meant no reflection upbn the Jate B, B. Redding
whom he had known long and iutimately. He said that the present
Commissioner Redding bad made
himself obnoxious to a majority of
the Commission by charges’ and
fault finding, and heonly refyrred to
the old Commission as a matter of
comparison. _ The diacussion_upon.
the comparative works of the two
Commissions continued for sum
time, and both Redding and Dibble
became so heated at. length that
President Buckingham had to interpose and ask them not to become so
excited, ae
