Important Decision as to Mineral Land Patents, ‘The Washington correspondent of the Sacramento Record says: ‘‘Under __the Act of May 10, 1872, the survey of mineral lands sought to be ‘patented must be made by or ynder the. direction_of the Surveyor-General before the application is filed. ~~" with the Register—and. Receiver; “while, under the-Act of July 26, 1866,. ia survey. need not be—made unti] after “the expiration of the~ ninety days’ publication. Again, “under the}; _—néw-_law-the—application for patent+ _must be sworn to; but, under the “eld, this wasnot required. Again, while the patent under the old Jaw ‘conveyed but one vein or lode;-the. new law enlarges the rights of patentees by giving them the right to all. lodes, ledges and’ veins, the top or apex—of which lie within the exterior boundaries of the survey, ~and which were not adversely claimed on May 10, 1872 might be filed-at any e pep yin to the expiration fthe 90 days’ publication, white under the new law laims must be filed, within sixty days’ publication, and suit commenced within thirty days from “the date of such filing, For these reasons the’ Commissioner of the Land Office holds thatapplications formineral patents filed under the old law after its repeal; must be recommenced under the new law. Murphy had been stabbed’ and, _ killed by James Mullen; that both were formerly residents of Grass Val_ ley, and that Mullen has a wife and children now residing near town. A correspondent of the Reese River Reveille of January 11th, writing from Belmont, Nev., givea_the following particulars: Ou Sunday~last,’ near East Belmont, Con. Murphy~ “was stabbed -by Jim Mullen. Murphy) died in-a few hours afterwards. ~ evidence before the committing magthat Murphy had been dogging Mullen for along time,and at different periods had threatencd violence, so inuch so that Mullen was afraid of his life. The men met on Sunday with the result above stated, Mullen immediately gave himself up to the Sheriff. The decision of the Justice was justifiable homicide. Department. : The newly elected members.of the Fire Department, at. The affairs of the office seem to he better administered than in Nevada, and the Chief makes an annual report of all the fires and alarms, with the losses for the year. We hepe the Board of Trustees ox. the Fire Delegates will require this of our Chief Eugineerin future. From the Grass Valley report we learn there have been 12 alarms. The aggregate loss from fire for the year is $15,608, insurance; $11,303; loss. to-property }— holders, $4,305. Such a record should be kept by the Chief Engineer in Nevada.
