Death of Capt, Ss. W. Lee.

towtisman, Capt.S. W. Gee, at Oak. ?
land, Monday last. He was for a
number of years a resident of Grass
. Valley, during which time he waasuperintendent and pat Owner of
the Empire mine, the’ olc'est-. quartz

in the State. Capt. Lee came to
Grass’ Valley in about the year 1864,
taking charge of the mine as. Superintendent and remaining as such
until 1869. when the property passed
‘into the hands of a new company.
Under his direction a new mill was
erected, said at the time to be the
finest in workmansbip and in all of
its appointments of any in the State.
This mill was afterward destroyed by
ffre, and was replaced by the one now
inuseonthemine, Capt. Lee was an
affable gentleman, possessed of much
force of character, and was universally esteemed by all who: enjoyed
. his acquuintange. Of late years he
has been more or less an invalid
from rheumatic disease, and to this
may be att:ibuted his comparatively
early demise. His age. was 50
years, and his mative State Pennsylvania. His funeral touk place from
the family residence, in Oakland, on
