a ° WEDNESDAY, JAN, 2, 1866, THe EMANCIPATION. . CELepRation.— The colored of Nevada and Grass} Walley, had a grand celebratisn of the anniversary ofthe Proclamation of Freedom in ___this_city. rem midnight until dawg, C ter’s Brase Band discoursed splendid inusic and many of our citizens whom. they eee! gaded were awakened in the new year by the Band playing, “Tramp, tramp, the boys gia,” or some other ‘piece which Carter’s ° exerc at the Theater csaacnagl at lock, P. m. After music by the. Band dhe reading of the Proclamation, a very Pailicat oration was delivered by D. A. Dryden. ‘The.exercises. throughout were itable to all. concerned. At night the xhibition and festival for the benefit \of the. . ME. Church took place. The exers hises' were confined mostly to-children, and ithey acquitted themselves well. “A large. { number of white persous were 1p attendance /and we heard many favorable opinions éxpressed by them. After the exercises, 4 ‘grab bag’ and “prize cake” were brought pee Th these everybody invested and quite pectable sum was realized. The party ye sat down to an excellent supper, to which they did the justice. derstand that the mon val will abolt pay the debt on the church. The entire celebration and the feeling which the evlored people manifested, showed that. they fully understand and properly appreciate the freedom which has been extended to their race. ‘CANNON BuusTep.—The: ie, was purchased by the, Republican arty of this city during the first qimpalgo, Which’ resulted in the choice of Abraham Lincoln, exploded on the Ist. It. has since ita purchase been in charge of Z>P. Davis, an expérienced gunner, and has on every ublic day and over the news of victory, whether in the field or at the ballot. box, been culled into ‘requisition. “Ou Monday last, twelve guns were fired, morning, nvvn and night, as & part of thh colored people's celebrativn of the ayniversay of the day ou which the Emancipation: Proelamatien ‘was_issued.— Fhethirty six ryununda were fired, whea Davis remarked that he had “one charge left and he would Gre one gun. for the white man.” The cartridge was rawmed home and at ite discharge the gun exploded and the fragments were_ thrown ia every diree, tion, Although a number of persons were ~ standing newt go one was injured: “One of _the fragments, about the size of a hat, was thrown several hundred yards. It-fell upou the roof of Judge Niles’ residence. and plastering. The gun wasa four pounder, -such as is‘commonly used on uforchant vessels, ee Tre New MItu.— Yesterday the ainiine of Hagadora, Clay. & Larkin’s will, at Hunt's Hill, fell upon cement for the first time. The mill has eight heavy stamps which are moved by a. twenty foot “hurdy gurdy”® wheel. The prsard sb two Z hundred feet and the water strikes the arms of the wheel through an inch and a quarter shaft, thus avoiding all gearing or belting. . With this simple machinery a speed of nine_ ty drops a minute can be obtained. The shaft of the mine is kept dry by a smaller wheel similar to that used in the mill. Phe company have not reiiched the main cement chaanel yet, but they have takea out about sixty tons of excellent coment, 8 the mill wilt be kept at work for some time “upon. the gravel taken from spurs fossil out from the channel. The mine promises “to be very. rich. Another mill ie being erected upon the Hill and in the Spring oth > will be put up. — Tae STacesx.—The Colfax stage arrived _. inthis city yesterday, about the usual hour, ~ and the stages from all other. points are making better time, The pleasant weather of the past fewdays bas dried the roads and _improved the travel. It seemed as we were dropping upon o race of Lilliputians, so ‘like ‘specks rappearéd~ the busy throng,; but when brought to their level, found the workmen a sturdy set, with complexion, if half concealed by a coat of smut, as fair as that of the fairest damsel, -They stood with astonished gaze, as miners always % to sed woman in their midst. The oid air, that made us draw our siswie closer as we descended, wus accounted for. We stood upon a pavement of ice, last year’s deposit and of. years before. Miniare glaciers clung to ovetshadowed crevices of rock. It seemed as _if we stood in the midst of a ruin of a vast cathedral; above, the blue domé of heaven capped the seemingly “narrow, Opening. The new apartwhich comfortable quarters will be arranged in the rear. Fronting upon the street, will be a comfortable and commodious office. Saxby & Lancaster understand the business thoroughly, and have the best livery stock to be found inthe mountains. When the contemplated improvements are completed, a look at the Empires tables will do a horse: man good. Cement Hu.t.—Within the past. few months several ledges have been prospected upon Cement Hill. in which the -indications are excellent. From one of the ledges, ‘thirty tons of splendid looking rock has been taken out, and it will be tested very soon at the French mill. We have been +-shown. a number of specimens from this ‘claim, which centaiu a consiterable amount of free guld: and ote of rich looking sulphurets. We are satisfied that the mill test will demonstrate the richness of the ledge. -.
