Se SATURDAY, JUNE 29. 1889. A Serenading PartyA serenade and surprise were given Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Robbins at their residence on Piety Hill Thursday night by the M. E. Charch choir of which Mr. Robbins has been so long amember. Upon reaching the house they gathered around the door and before entering rendered some choir songs accompanied on the piano harp by Mr: Kolla and on the guitar by Miss A. Freeman. This brought the host and hostess to the door and a hearty welcome was given to all. A most enjoyable evening was spent. Wedding cake and other refreshments were freely passed and a most pleasing feature of the eyening was the ‘presentation of a beautiful silver fruit basket to the newly married couple by the choir. Rev. William Angwin was called upon to do the speechmaking for the chuir, and Mr. Robbins appropriately responded. On leaving’ good night song was sweetly" rendered on the outside. You Set Mines. Drink, religious delusions, family troubles and the like gradually undermine some minds, but the narcotic drugs land their victims in the asylums as suddenly ar though they were launched on a toboggan slide. The expert says: “The nuinber of patients from the cause is rapidly increasing, and it is said that there have teen more men and women committed during the last #1 month+ for dementia occasioned by drugs than there were for the same reason during the ten previous years. It is hbeyona “guestion that narcotics are a more prolifie source of insanity. than all othe: causes combined.” This should be » warning to the many in this place who are dabblers in such drugs. To the People of Nevada City, Ure, £. C. Huntington, owner of the Ne vada City Water Works, respectfully anto the people of Nevada City and t of the t actiom of the City Trustees of Nevade City in reducing to an ble and unprofitable figure the rates to be collected by her during the coming year, commencing July 1st, 1889, for supplying water to the people of Nevada City, ste will be compelled to retire from such business at the close of her present contract with the city, vis: June $3th, 1889. She regrets extremely that the said action of the City Trustees forces her to terminate relations with the city, which for many years past have been of a pleasant chara ter. For several years past, the Nevada City Water Works have yielded only a fair and reasonable profit. More than $40,000 has been expended i brinsing the property up to its present efficient condition, end for the year 198 the net profits of the Works amounted to atrifie over $2100. Inthe face of this condition of affairs and the protest of the owner, the City Trostees at their February meeting lowered the water rates for the coming year to figures that will reduce the income on the property approximately $1,000 to $1,500. Every year the owner has expended cousiderable sums of money in making improvements on the property, and ith s seemed that the more the works have been improved the. more the rates have been cut. The owner does not object to having some of the rates lowered, provided s reasonable sum be added to the rates of those . who use and waste large amounts of water, . sothat the income of the Works will not be materially lessened. This is all that has been asked, and we submit to the people that it is just and fair. The owner has no . water right. She bas to buy water, and she sells it over again to the consumert., As a business,if it fails to pay, it naturally must be discontinued. In this connection, the owner desires to thank the people of Nevada City and vicinity for the liberal patronage which they have bestowed upon her in the past, and she regrets the unfor tunate circumstances which compe! her to discontinue the water business. From and after July 1st, 1889, she will dis continue supplying the reservoirs of the Nevada City Water Works with water, but will leave them full on that date. If thereafter the water therein is used for ordimay purposes, it is done at the people’s risk. "Very Respectfully, MRS. ELEANOR C. HUNTINCTON, Per J.E.
