month of February amid the scenes
of festivity.: ~ =. ,
Narwes, Dec. 12.—We came to
this city at 4. Mm. yesterday. This
morning-we went to Castelamara,
one hour by sail, four miles from
tel Belvadere, a very large house on
a high mountain, jn fine view of the
bay. Old Vesuvitis, too, is doing its
best to entertain and™astonish us,
now being active’ and-infull-bdlast.
1t is truly wonderful; but T-wou.d
not care to-get much nearer it, and
when I think of the ruin and devastation wrought by this wonde-ful
do not care to divell long in its’ immediate vicinity. The quaint and
sleepy old {tahan city of Castelamara, with its 28,0 Oinhabitauts is just
below us, and willno dowbt—be laid
in-ruins again, as it has been before,
by this teriible mountain. From
this house we have a lovely view of
the sea and seve.al villages aloug the
coast. Atnight we can seethe fyhts
of Naples, 17 miles distant, while the
lurid flame of the volcano shoo.s up
every tew sevonds; igbting“ap the
darkness, and the.redstreain of lava
whieh flows, down its side is beautifulto behold, so thatwe admire
while we fear the burning mass.—
The wonder to me is that another
Village hag sprung Up so near the ruins of Pompeii and-even nearer” Vesuvius than was that ill-fated city.
Lu my next I hope to be able to tell
you of out visit tu the ruins of that
. once lovely city, and the spot_where
Hercu‘aneum once stood. We are
more pleased with Italy than any
othertoreign country we have seen,
exvept England. Near y all the way
from-Rome to Naples one is strongly
reminded of Calitécnia ; you coud
almost imayine yourself passing th.o’
