Married in Spite of Themselves.
Some years ago, when free-love notions
were running ground loose in New England, a Boston man and woman who had
imbibed of those doctrines until they affected to despise all the common conventionalities of lifecame to the eonclusion
that they would live together without
going through the ceremony of marriage.
They had both moved in good society and
made no secret of their intention. In fact,
they announced it to every one they met.
Staid old Boston’s aristocracy was
shaken to the depths. :
The man was prevailed upon to give a
dinner party, to which were invited prom{nent society people, including the Governor of the State. ‘When dessert was put
upon the table the talk became general,
ricticed by the youth and soon turned upon the perverse couple.

took a hand in the conversation. After
asking a few questions, and commenting
on the answers thereto, ina calm, judicial
manner, he turned to the man and asked:
“Do you, Mr. —, intend to love and
cherish this woman as your wife, for good
or evil, for better or worse?” i
“Yes, sir,’ answered the man calmly.

In those days the question of crossing
the ocean by steam had long been agitated, and the popular belief: was that it
could not be done, as so much room would
be taken up in carrying coal that there
would be no space left to stow away the
freight on which the owners hoped to
make their profits.
So when it was known that two steam
vessels were coming up the bay people
flocked to the: Battery to witness the
strange sight. The Sirius was the first to
arrive in the evening, and the Great
Western came up three hours later. The
Sirius did the voyage in seventeen days
and the Great Western in fifteen.
Though the arrival of the two steamships marked the beginning of steam
navigation between the two countries the
ocean had been crossed:as early as 1819 by
a vessel using steam, but the trip was
