loose to create ruin ond disaster
’ glong the canyone andeven in the
valley. And the fact that such a
thing is possible haw been one of the
Bee’s strongest arguments against
the permitting of other and greater
streams, In the-course of years hydraulic mining would peter out, anyhow, and then whose duty would it
be to look after these dams and keep
them in repair? ‘What. sategnard
would the people in the valley have
against their breaking and flooding
the lowlands with water and mud ?
Here,we have the matter bruught
right home to.as.:. ‘The. hydraulic
mining localities are coveréd with
reservoirs of great storing capacity,
and if these shall be abandoned they
will burat some of these. days; and
when they.do pour out their great
volumes of water the .people below’
had better flock to very. high land.
Probably there is no law to prevent
the ownera of these reservoirs from
abandoning them, batif they should . ,
do so, then. the people of the valley
must take steps to protect them
stlves. We repeat, we have better} *
* opinien of the hydrauho miners, as u
class, than to believe themeapable of
any desire to. reveyge themselves
upon the valley people by. .qutting
dams, etci,and allalleged threata of}:
auch nature we are ‘now disposed’ tu
‘treat as imaginary on the part of a
few who seem to regard the hydrauljoker as some sort of a hobgoblin of
” the mountains, but theother matter
ia deserving of attention.”
We are told that “the ‘wicked
flee when no man pursueth,” and the
trepidation of the.valley people as
indicated by our contemporary’s remiatke’is readily accounted for.
There is no hidden meaning to the
dispatch sent from Nevada City
about the abandonment for a time
at least of the mining canala in the
upper part of this county. It is a
plain, unvarnished statement of. a
result already brought about by the
vicious aud persistent prosecution of
the miners, Other calamities of a
similar but more sweeping character
will follow on its heels ia cave some
moditication is not ovtained of the
principles laid down by Sawyer in his decision. The anti-miners Went alittle too far for their,
own and the State’s good, as well aa
® the miners’ good, when they declared that they would listen to no
terms of compromise. We do not
mean by this that the miners will be
foolish e.ough to burn their ‘bridges
behind them,” as it: were, by cui"
ting the dams and drowning out the
valleyites. They are not so inhuman
aa that, neither would the game
pay for the powder. Another ’62
flood WILL sweep away Marysyille
and devastate the surrounding country, however, uul-se ‘the people of
~¢he Sacramento valley heed our oftrepeated warnings and, coming down
from their positions of insolent selfdams being erected across the largerpoorer guarters of London,
