SATURDAY, SAN. 25th, 1868.
Rumors oF Cornuprion.—Rumors
are rife of great--corruption in-the late
, Senatorial contest. One statement is
that the several candidates, with their
friends, made use of over $1,000,000 to
~-tnfluenee the choice.. We do not know,
that any of these charges are made
‘against Casserly, but it is certain that
~-& pamphlet was published by Volney
E. Howard, one of the contestants for
the Senatorial toga, in which he charged his fellow Democrats with all manner of corruption. This record by one
who was onthe inside, was for some
cause “not yet explained, suppressed,
and it is stated that only a few copies
ate-in existence: We should like to
obtain one, but as the welfare of De~~ mmocracy demands that the dark record
should be hid, we have little hope.—
We trust, however, that the Legislature
may succeed in bringing to light some
of the scenes enacted behind the curtain, that the people. may know how
adept the Democracy are at their old
~ re ture adopt some stringent measure
against thiscorruption? In the State of
New York, and especially in the mete 0 teieeny bes pet
practiced than any where in the coun"try; and of late several measures have
been suggested to prevent the evil—
The plan which has received most favor is to inflict-a fine and to imprison
these yeas, provided it is not accepted.
_ Ifthe bribe is accepted he is exempt
from punishment, but the receiver of
~ the bribe is to be punished to the same
extent. This will place one or the othBL er in a position always where he may
on the guilty without personal
tisk. It is well known that money is
largely used in the political contests in
this State, and if the Legislature will
to put an end to such
practices it will bea great good to the
State. Men of merit may then become
candidates for offices, though they do
not have large corporations to back
them, andthe State wil] be able to se
cure much better officers.

Vistrine Prrsician.—We learn that
Dr. Overton, formerly of this city, has
been nominated by the Democratio
caucus Visiting ExSvicien to the Stockhad charge of the County Hospital in
this county and served one term as

SHED CrusHED.—The lumber shed

WE learn from the Union thatthe
heavy quartz men of Grass Valley are
talking of constructing a branch rail

that event they will endeavor to get the
County Seat removed. We apprehend
that they stand about as much chance
of getting the railroad as they. do the
County Seat.
Gites’ Quartz Emory Paste.—The

a fracture of his right leg.
A Porc CORRESPONDENT —We are
not in the habit of advertising letters

entities this letter to a free notice:
In India, there are now laboring 25
Protestant Missionary Societies. Of
these, three are organized in Scotland,
eight in England, one in Ireland, four
on the continent of Europe, and nine in
America. These societies maintain
about 550 missionaries, and expend ‘annually in thatcountry about $1,250,000.
Some WEATHER.—A Vermont paper
says that the weather there, just now,
