The Trustees of Nevada School District .

of the Distriet.Less: than two years
since two thousand dollats were ex~~ petided ini additional rooms and bulld‘ings, and yet all.the time the District
has: hired and occupied one of the
_ehurches of the city for a school house.
The members of this church want their
house. ‘But there are no means to
__ purchase or build : ‘@ substitute for it—
~ “The school 3 belonging to the
District are far from being what they .
should be. As far as they go they. are
rather poor apologies for school rooms,
but might be made to answer a purpose for a year or two longer, if extendations. The Trustees have been compelled to order some of the older scholas ars out to give place to others; and ur~
det home the youhgest to get room.—
Besides this, children cannot be promoted from the primaries to the interme—

a petition was signed by the representatives of three quarters of a million of
property in the District, asking for a
tax to be levied for the purpose of buildHalf the session is gone, and we have
no definite action on the part of the
Legislature touching the case of our
District. It has been reported, that a
_general law is to be passed to increase
the amount of tax a District may vote
for ‘school purposes, to one per cent.—
General laws are preferable, if they do
not defeat the object, they have in view,
Uy unwieldy machinery. We care not
what/sort of a law is passed, if it only
ws rapid action so that a school
house can be constructed in time for the
commencement of the new school year
in August. Everything should be done

The house was occupied “by Mr. Ber-.
gantz’s family, and Mr. L. L. Bullock’s
family. The fire was first discovered
by Mrs. Bullock, in the upper story of
"the “presw house,” the lower story of]
whieh was used for the manufacturing
and stofing away witiés. No fire had
been used in this house for two weeks
and none of the family had been in it
for two days. Mrs. Bullock promptly
alarmed the others in the ‘house, who
had but little time to escape, so rapidly
did the flames spread ‘to the main building. With the assistance of neighbors,
‘and at great risk. some of. the parlor
furniture including a yaluable piano
was saved. The night was stormy, and
almost all of those so suddenly turned
out of comfortable quarters had been
recently sick. They had to pass the
rest of the night in the barn in wet
clothes and suffering with cold, .The.
loss is a heavy one, between $6,000 and
$7,000. Mr. Bergantsz believes the fire
to have been the work of an incendiary,
but knows of no one who has such
enmity toward him as to furnish a
motive for the deed. Had the fire oc—
curred half an‘hour later in the night
inmates of the building» would have
been lost.
