NEVADA CITY, CAL. a City, County and U. 8 -Gaieial ise PRESS. a ‘Wednesday, Jan. 28th, 1874. . Whe “Metrepeli .” Yesterday we made a short visit to the ‘‘metropolis’’ of this connty, as ‘where the streetsare paved with “gold, though we saw uo gates set versed with a great many persons on the subject of constructing a railroad fron Nevada, to connect with. the yreat Central Pacific at some point most convenient to our city,-having yeferene to the cheapness of construction. We found a. diversity of opinion: prevailing; some_ advocated a road_to Colfax,-~dthers a road to ‘ Auburn, and a few a rood to Wheatland. A large majority of those with whcm we conversed favored a road . ‘to Colfax, and among this number . were the editor of the Union and . nan being enthusiastic in favor of the construction of ths road to.Colfix. Mr. Leech has given a great deal of thought to the. subject, and is prepared to furnish the committee: recently appointed to take the matter into consideration, with a full statement of the cost of every mile ‘of the road-on the Colfax route, the “Orten-of hav¥ing-andaciously stated graph Company —has The Telegraph Company. . The 26th, contains a long article, in which the writer shows up Mr. Orton of the Westerh Unien Telegraph Co. in an unenviable ,light. It accuses Mr, a falsehood to the Senate Committee on Post Offices and Post Roads. It not only accuses Mr. Orton, of tell-inga lie, but it proves his guilt beyond a doubt. : Mr. Orton stated to the commitee, that there is no combination between the Associated Press-and the WestSan Francisco Post of the . Mr. Leech thiwtks there will be no difficulty in raising the amount of money necessary, if capitalists can be assured of 15 cents per mile for years, and a fair price for conveying . passengers. He thtnks four—eents . per mile entirely too low, and we be reached from Nevada City in 19 miles, and that the price of passento Colfax should be at least $2 for the first five years, and $1 50 thereafter, uiitil the road paid a dividend ‘of 10 per cent. to the stockholders. Mr. Leech intimated, that if he could be assured of a tariff of 15 cents per mile, per ton, for freight, and ten cents per mile for passengers, ‘for the the period cf fifteen years, he would undertake to raise the capital for the construction of the road and encgaced in the earrving trade? Mr. Dibble the opinion that more than one half the money required for the construction of the road, can be raised at Grass Valley. He named to us five $100,000 of the stock, and said many more would take smaller amounts. From all we saw and heard at the ‘‘metropolis,”’ we are inclined to bélieve her citizens are desirous to assist us in the construction of a railroad from: Nevada via Grass Valley wo .
