Yesterday we made a short visit to
the ‘‘metropolis’’ of this connty, as
‘where the streetsare paved with
“gold,though we saw uo gates set
versed with a great many persons on
the subject of constructing a railroad
fron Nevada, to connect with. the
yreat Central Pacific at some point
most convenient to our city,-having
yeferene to the cheapness of construction. We found a. diversity of
opinion: prevailing; some_ advocated
a road_to Colfax,-~dthers a road to
‘ Auburn, and a few a rood to Wheatland. A large majority of those with
whcm we conversed favored a road .

were the editor of the Union and .
nan being enthusiastic in favor of
the construction of ths road to.Colfix. Mr. Leech has given a great
deal of thought to the. subject, and
is prepared to furnish the committee:

money necessary, if capitalists can
be assured of 15 cents per mile for
years, and a fair price for conveying .

The Effects of the Tarift.
An exchange says: “It is a fact

The Size of Countries.
The Red sea would reach from

have benefited by the change, “the
tariff had better be reimposed, as the
country needs all the revenue it can
get, at this time. The duty never
should have been abolished, and the
sooner it is restored the better it will

The editor of the Union is equally
as-enthusiastic in favor of the road,
and will do-allhecan to further theproject, Col. \ Watt, ~ Major Dibble,
Gen, Delano, and‘dther capitalists of
the ‘‘metropolis’’ are willing to lend
a helping haiid. Mr. Dibble
the opinion that more than one half
the money required for the construction of the road, can be raised at
Grass Valley. He named to us five
$100,000 of the stock,and said many
more would take smaller amounts.

‘‘metropolis,”’ we are inclined to bélieve her citizens are desirous to assist us in the construction of a railroad from: Nevada via Grass Valley
