PIONEER’S LETTER.
“Turn the Rascals OGut''—Cisposing of
Dead Humanity—A Shot at the
National Guard—The _
State's Piece
Club.
San ERkancisco, June Ist, 1887.
Epiror Transcript:—One by one
the roses fall. Cleveland and his aids
‘are-gradually illustrating their ideas
of “civil service—reform”’—by—turning:
yout Republicans and putting Democrats in office. That-is all right, if he
‘wants to doit, and I am glad of it.
-What business has a Republican—to
hold office under a Democratic administration?. Let them all-out! In office they are dumb dogs, hardly daring to vote, or voting the Democratic
ticket, Ont of office they regain their
manhood and Republicanism, and reinforse the great army of outs, who
finally tear down any man or party
responsible for their exclusion: They
are usually the best politicians and
‘workers who get office, and their party, if out of power, is better off in
strength when they are sent back to
work for it. The Superintendent. of
the Mint has just.made a clearing out
of Republicans and putin Democrats,
mostly of the Irish persuasion. That
is all right, too, for the Irish are the
™main stay of the Democracy, and are
entitled to its favors. Unfortunately
for them, there a thousand disappointed applicants to one who getsa pull at
“the official teat. Among those let out
by the recent order is Frank Fisher,
well-known in Nevada City from his
long residence there. He was the chief
adjuster of the mint, andan excellent
one. He had charge and direction of
all the ladies at work in the institu
tion, and there were no scandals or
failures in efficiency under his administration.
San Francisco is agitatiny for a new
graveyard. It needs one, certainly.
The prevailing winds here are from
the south-west, so all the cemeteries
are put south-west of the city, where
the wind blows their emanations over
us; and being on hills, their drainage
passes through the city. Modern science has discovered that the worms
about cemeteriés are great disseminators of disease. They are. constantly
going down to the bodies and coming
up again, and bring up with them the
spors of consumption, . fevers, etc.,
which are taken up in the air with the
* dust and blown where they willdo the
most harm. InSpain when a sheep
dies the shepherd buries it deep in
the ground. It has been found that
however deep, the worms from the
surface find it, and rise with the elements of its disease, which they leave
on the grass; that the sheep eating the
grass die with the same disease.
It is proposed to put the cemeteries
down in San Mateo county. This
would be well if there could be special
funeral trains on certain days, when
all burials could be made, as they are
in Mexico, and then the cars be fumigated. But where the funeral procession, including those who stood in the
sick chambers, are mixed up with
other passengers, disseminating on
plush seats, excellently adapted to receive them, the infections that cannot
be avoided under such a system, no
worse arrangement for the health and
safety of the trayeling public could be
devised. But this is a very grave subject.
There is but one entirely safe method of disposing of the remains ofthe
departed, and that is by cremation. It
is cleanly, it is healthful forthe living,
and it certainly avoids those dreadful.
buryings alive of which evidence is produced. from time to time under the
present system. Only a false sentiment prevents the general adoption of
cremation, and its advocates are continually increasing.
A citizens’ committee has. been organized here to celebrate the 4th of
July with the usual observances, including a procession. But the local
military have arranged to go intocamp
at Healdsburg on the 2d, and’ so decline to participate. This makes
trouble in the camp, and the committee have passed resolutions asking our
next members of the legislature to oppose all appropriations for the citizen
soldiery. But unless a better class of
legislators are chosen than the grand
average of those heretofore serving,
they will promise each side to obey
their wishes, and tl:en favor the one
As the legislature is nearly two years off, the military will not likely be scared by the
paper bullet shot at it.
What a pity it is that the California
legislature has acquired the reputation
of being a piece club! There was a
time when this was very different—
when the majority of the legislature
were honest. Now itis too apparent
that the majority are dishonest. Men
seek the office for its illicit gains, and
sell themselves and the State at varying degrees of cheapness. Ned Marshall once said that ‘‘the man in the
moon holds his nose as he passes over
Sacramento.”” If he don’t he* ought

What the Mt. Lebanon Shakers
Found—Incident in the History of a Quiet Community,’
The Mount Lebanon (New }~ a
York) Shakers are a quiet community, secluded from the fret
and worry of the outside world.
They are widely \known, how:
ever, for their stfict honor and
probity in business. i
The Shakers believe that nature has aremedy for every disease. A few have been found—
the rest are as yetunknown.
Many were discovered by accident. Others came to light as
the result of patient experiment
and research.
Nervous Dyspepsia is a comparatively new disease, growing ‘}
out of the conditions of modern
life. It isa joint affection of
the digestive organs and of the
nervous system. . These two
were formerly treated as separate ailments, and it was left
for the clear-sichted Shakers
to prove that the basis of this
terrible and often fatal complication lies chiefly in the disordered and depraved functiong of
digestion and nutr'‘ion. ey
reasoned thus:—‘“li we can induce the stomach to do its
work, and stimulate the excretive organs to drive out of the
body the poisonous waste matters whicl: remain after the lifegiving elements of the food
ave been abscrbed, we shall
have conquered, Nervous Dyspepsia and Nervous Exbaustion, And they were right.
Knowing the infallible power
of Shaker Extract (Scigel’s
Syrup) \in less ‘aye iat
though similar diseases,
they resolved. to test it fully
in this. To leave no ground
for doubt they prescribed the
remedy in hundreds of cases
which had been pronounced incurable—with pérfect success
in every iustance where tidir
directions as to living and -diet
were scrupulously followed.
Nervous Dyspepsia and Exhaustion i$ a peculiarly American disease. To a greater or
less extent he!f the. people of
this country suffer from it—,
both sexes anilall ages. Inno
country in the world are there
so many in-ane a-ylums filled
to overfiswcing resulting
from this «: «: disease. Its
leading sytuipicins are these:
Frequent or co:tinual headache; a dull pain at the base
of the brain; bad breath; nauseous erucistions; the rising
of sour and punyent fluids to
the throat; 2 sense of oppression and faintuess at the. pit of
the stomach ; flatnlence; wakefulness and loss of sleep; disgust with food even when
weak from the need of it; sticky
or slimy matter on the teeth or

ing in the morning; furred and
coated tongue; dull eyes; cold
hands and feet; constipation ;
dry or rofigh skin ; inability to
fix the mind on any labor calling for continuous attention;
and oppressive and sad forebodings and fears.
All this terrible up
Shaker Extract (Seigel’s
Syrup) removes by its positive, powerful, direct yet
painless and gentle action upon
the functions of digestion and
assimilation. Those elements
of the food that build up and
strengthen the system are sent
upon their mission, while ally
waste matters (the ashes of life’s
fire) which unremoved, poison
and kill, are.expelled from the
body through the bowels, kidneys and skin; ~The weak and
prostrated nerves are quieted,
toned and fed by the purified
blood. As the result, health,
with its enjoyments, blessings
and power, returns to the sufferer who had, perhaps, abandoned all hope of ever seeing
another well day. Pa

MILLINERY WORK.
“A good milliner must be an .artist,
forunless they have the taste in combining colors, they will produce only
poor effects with rich materials. If,
however, the milliner has skill in the
management of -colors; and original
ideas. as’ to-grace.and form, it is surprising to see what handsome Bonnets
and Hats can be produced from even
simple materials.” In our establishment we employ only an efficient milliner, and aim to display ‘as much
skill upon the medium and low-priced
work as on the more expensive kinds.
