realize that if their real motives
were understood, they would receive
no sympathy from any quarter. One
great object they have sought, has
been to depreciate values in their
own localities to their lowest limit,
go that the small farmers would be
obliged to sacrifice their holdings to
them at their own figures. And to
accomplish this end, they have resorted to a system of lying that
would disgrace Satan himself. They
have lied persistently about the present danger, the past and anticipated
damages that the lands in question
have or likely hereafter to suffer
from the usual annual <overfiow.
They have lied in this:—that they

this same section thirty years ago
was more imminent from year to
year, and when it occurred more
ruinous in its results, than at the
present time. And it is reasonable
that this should be so, for themen of
the mountains, in furthering their
own industrial interests, have by
building hundreds of immense _storage reservoirs, held back the water
of its rivers and streams at'the time
of most imminent peril to the endangered lowlands, The truth is,
that the miners, by these great

any gratitude in their composition,

mountaineers that to-day stand as a

But this would be too much like acknowledging the falsity and ingratitude of their present position. So
much honesty need not be expected
from that quarter.

To THE TraDE.—Practical experience has demonstrated to us that
the trade requires’a choice old Bourbon for immediate use. For it is
well known that whisky that is absolutely pure requires age, care and
attention, ‘and our old Davenport
whisky possesses all the above qualities. The grain used in the distillation of our J. H. Davenport,
_. whisky is always selected from the
finest, richest and best grown in the
State of Kentucky. The water is
drawn from one of the finest limestone springs in the Stute, the peculiar properties which have gained for
Kentucky whiskies such world-wide
7
celebrity. This process makes our
J, H. Daven 2 a a pure, hand-made
sour mash whiskv, and we claim that
for delicacy of flavor, purity and
medicinal qualities it stands unexcelled. Yours Truly, <
Scuurtz & VONBARGEN,
AFTER an experience of many
years I have at. laat succeeded in
finding a whisky (the J. H. Daven

which I can recommend for medicinal purposes, I will keep this whisky for sale in future. Call and try
it. Itis pure. You willlike it,
