The Funeral of Mrs. Preston.
The funeral of Mrs. Maggie H. Pres

be satisfied when I awake in Thy
likeness.”” The singing wos by the
Methodist choir and was of superior
quality. After the ceremony at the

to Pine Grove Cemetery where the

The -pall-bearers were J. T. Morgan,

Thursday Nights Senefit.
Next Thursday ‘evening’s performance at the Theater in this city should
and doubtless will attract a large audience. The olject is a grand one,
viz: the raising of money to be applied
to the fund of the Good Templar Orphan Asylum at Vallejo. The play of
“Comrades”? is remarkably strong,
and the amatners who are to represent it earned the most. unstinted
praise for their performance at Grass
Valley last week. !
Wanteda Wife.
The Kingston (Arizona) Weekly
Shaft says: Wednesday, while passing by the Copper King Company, we
saw. a sign in a window of a neat, little frame cottaze. It was pathetic in
the extreme, when one considers the . loneliness of the miner, away. out in
the hills, deprived of the comforts of
home and the joys of the fairsex. I
simply read thus: ‘‘Wanted—A wife.
Apply within; nobody barred.’’

THE GREATEST. ~
A Stupendous Aggregation of
Burnt Cork Talent.
Goodyear, Cook & Dillun’s Refined
Minstrels will appear at this city on
Saturday evening next, Thia is one
of the. finest companies on the road.
There are thirty people in it, among
them being the famous comedians,
George E. Edwards and Goodyear ; the
greatest of all clog dancers, Welby
and Pearl ; ElJsworth Cook, whom the
press speak of as having a phenomenal
voice; Ben Mowatt, the king of club
swingers ; the three Nichols Brothers,
premier gymnasts, in their wonderfui
zig-zag; the Leech Brothers, the wonderful banjo wizards, in their beautiful
banjo song and dances and juggling;
the Dillon Brothers in their latest
mastodon song and dance, ‘*Rehearsal
in the Woods’; also numerous other
stellar attractions too numerous to
specify.
The-Chronicle of Spokane Falls, W.
T., says of the troupe: =
“Beyond a doubt and without fear
of contradiction, itis safe to say that
Goodyear, Cook & Dil'on’s Minstrels
are the peers of any like organization
on the road today, and the entertainment given by them in the Opera
House last evening was a good head
and shoulders above anything in that
line ever witnessed by a Spokane audience. From the raising of the curtain until it dropped-on-the final act
those present were treated to two hours
and a half of solid, side-splitting fun.
Chat it was appreciated by the largé
audience present goes without saying,
They were in a continual scream of
laughter during the whole performance
and the dropping of the curtain on the
finale was the means of preventing
them all from going into hysterics.
Every member_of-the company is an
artist in his-line and there was not
even one pour piece of timber to mar
the evening’s entertainment. It was
good from the top to the bottom of the
program, each succeeding act rivaling
the others in its mirth producing effect. Goodyear, Cook & Dillon advertise their company of artists as
“chestnut boycotters,’’ and right well
is the title deserved as the thousand
and one funny gags were all new and
richand were of a refined nature.
During part first! the audience were
treated to some excellent singing,
which combined with the funny sayings pleased the audience vastly.
Next came the quartette of Glog dancers by the Di lon and Leech brothers
also Welby and Peirl who are undoubtedly the finest in ths profession. Ben
Mowatt in his éxhibition of club swinging set the audience wild with delight
and admir.tion. He is a marvel with
the clubs, juggling them with lightning-like rapidity. He has no equal
in his turn. The Leech brothers, in
their banjo act, were im mense, dancing
to the accompaniment of their own
music, Welby and Pearl, in the
breuk-neck dances and witty sayings,
were frequently and loudly applauded.
Charles Goodyear, as a comedian, isa
star among artists. He convulsed his
hearers with his originalities. George
H. Ed.sards is close upon his heels in
this line, and was a favorite witn the
audience. The three Nichols bro hers,
in their acrobatical performance, were
good. The evening’s entertainment
close.l with a most lauzhible afterpiece, entitled, ‘Somnambulistic Reveries.’ It is safe to say that never
was an audience more pleased than
was that of last evening.” *
HE SENT IT EAST.
For '@ year I was troubled with pains ir
my back and side, and headaches, the result
of liver and kidney trouble. I was attracted
to Joy’s Vegetable Sarsaparilla by the startling testimonials in the papers and which
seemed so practical I was induced to try it,
knowing that as it was purely vegetable, it
would at any rate do no harm. It acted as a
gentle laxative and after the second bottle*
my pains and aches disappeared and I felt
like a new man. It did so much for me that
I sent several bottles to my family in New
Jersey, who also took it with the most satisfactory results.

Another Pest.
The Tulare Times has discovered a
new grape pest. According to that!
journal this worm feeds on the vines
at night only. On the: appearance of
the sun it-falls tothe ground-and burrows in the earth until the reapproac!
of evening. The Times asserts that
a8 many as 200 of these worms have
been found on one vine, but that they
had stripped it of all sprouts and
grapes in process of formation.
This new enemy to the viticultural
industry is of recent appearance, but
promises to, be exceedingly destructive. Itis said to bear a slight resemblance to the army worm. Neithe
water nor sulphur has any effect on it,
and some of the pests will be sent to
Professor Hilgard of the State University in the hope shat he may be able
to suggest a remetly for their destruction.

We would not be ashamed to i inte the largest city in the United States
and show our stock and work. @ also warn the people of Nevada county
not to be humbugged by drummers, who come up from the city with a line
of samples, and who spend their money — from one saloon to another,
lress up to kill and tell you what great bargains they can give you in tailormade clothing, as they get_a big commission from the house they represent;
and you are theones that have to pay for all that. :
Merchant ‘Tailoring is a bisiness in which a man must bea first-class
tailorin order torun it successfully,
L. Hyman, of the firm of L. Hyman’& Company, is a practical tailor himself, and has worked throughout the largest cities_in England and in the
United States, and has had charge of different establishments during that
ime.
We have papers to show in white and black the different first-class tailoring
establishments he had been foreman over, which fact goes to prove that he
understands his business perfectly. Z
‘We willalso say to the people of Nevada county that when FP ge give your

This drummer, who takes your measure, generally travels for three or four
houses, representing merchant tailoring, gents furnishing
merchandise houses—each house paying him a big commission for taking
ders. Now, when a San Francisco house receives an order for a suit, we
would like to ask the people of Nevada county how that cutter can tell how
(he person is built whom the order is for. Some men may walk straight,
some may walk with the head down, some-may have one shoulder lower than
‘he other, and still others may have round shoulders and different waists.
Now, with all these faults that we have mentioned, how can that cutter in °
San Francisco remedy them? He never saw you and don’t kno » howyou
‘re built.* It-make no diffurence how youd a cutter he may be or what salary

measure just as the drummer sends it to him in from the country, and so he
cannot remedy the faults before mentioned. These drummers are not tailors,
and they do not understaiid taking measures.
Merchant tailoring is a business a man must thoroughly understand before
he starts into it. It is not he-who wears the garment that makes it fit, but the
tailor that mukes it. A garment may be matte in three or four different ways
snd_fit, but still the work may not be in it. There ia not one man in ten that
van tell when a garment is made up, what kind of work is in it, unless he is a
first-class tuilor, :
Since we have opened our merchant tailoring establishment in Grass Valley
we have opened it in a first-class manner, employing nothing but first-clas
cutters, coat, pants and veat-imakers, :
These mechanics we had to get from first-class tailoring establisiments in
San Francisco, and guarantee them work all the year round before they could
(@ induced tocome tu Gruss Valley. : :
This class of mechanics is very hard to get for the reason that there is
ilways plenty of work in San Francisco all the year round without coming to
the country. :
They are good mechanics and we pay them good wages.
When you have a suit made in our Grae Valley establishment you are
treated different here than in any other tailoring establishments on the Pacific
Coast, and can always yet a suit made here from $5 to $10 cheaper than in any
other house on the Pacific Coast, for these reasons: In the first place we rent a
+ore ovcupying two floors, each 75 feet long, and our tailorin workshops connecting with the building is 30 feet long. A store like this 3 San Francisen
on Market or Keurny street would command a rental of from $1,500 to $2,000
per month. : We don’t pay: this rent, so our customers have the benfit of it,
But instead of this we havea lease for a long term of years at $45 per month ;
and another reason is that we don’t piy any commission to drummers, and’
these are the reasons why we can make you a suit so much cheaper than any
other merchant tailoring estabhshment on the Pacific Coast. And when you
have a suit made in our establishment you will see that it will always re
roving in shape and never gets out of shape like tho-e made in other 8 Ops.
We will guarantee a perfect fitund good work or nosale. And no suit will
be sent (. O. D. We give youa chance to try on the xarment and see that
it in satisfactory, and if it is not, send it buck to usat our expenre, :
But when you have # suit made in San Francisco it comes C. 0, D., and
you have to tuke it, titor no fit. But if you patronize home you always have
something to full back on. : :
