R, Cross, Deputy Sheriff-of Truckee, went over to Grass Valley’ oti Sheriff Dickson’s horse. He left Grass Valley to return to Nevada about 2 o’clock Sunday morning, and when he got on the road, the horse, which is a racer, wanted to go. Cross-.concluded to speed him a little and let him outon . the grade from the flume towards the top of the hill south of Glenbrcok Park. Just -before he reached the -top of the hill-a man stepped out. from “bushes and said, “Hold on," Cross tried to pull up,’”’ but e6uald not check the horse. The mian ~ then halloed in a sharper tone, ‘‘Stop ‘I tell you,’’ and attempted to ‘grab. the horse. By this time the horse struck the would-be robber and knocked him over. Cross, who was expecting a shot from the xear, hugged close to the horse’s mane, and it was not long before he was out of range over the hill. The Library Meeting. ‘The Nevada Library Association met on Saturday evening, and-adjourned to Wednesday next at 8 o’clock, in order to give the business men ai opportunity to attend.
