LOCAL MATTERS. —
Stuice Ropper SuoT.—On last Sunday
night the watchman of the Manzanita claims:
~ thought he observed a light : in the tuntiel.
He informed the . hands employed by the
company, and soon a guard was stationed
at each end of the tunnel and the mouth of
the shafts to prevent the escape of the robber,
James Stewart and a man’ named Hart,
were stationed at the lower @id of the tannel. . The thief remained in the tunnel from }
1 until 40’clock yesterday morning. Tho.
parties on guard at the lower end, observed
‘his light until he reached the mouth of the
funnel, when jhe stopped to extinguish it.
Stewart, who’ was armed with a rifle, fired,
and the man It was so dark that the .
watchmen could seareely see. They. heard .
‘the ro; Togue moan, and fired six shots from a
Davy: revolver, but could not tell whether .
“any shot took effect. In the morning, parties traced the rogue about four hundred
yards by the blood.. He passed through an
old tunnel, and each brace of the sluice
boxes was marked with blood. From this
point all trace of the robber was lost, and it
is supposed that he was\helped off by an accomplicé. It is not known whether he got:

game that they made no attempt to secure.
him until morning. Whoever the robber.
may “have = “been, he “probably received @ satan SO
“wound which will prevent his engaging in:
~ such an énterprise again, very soon.
——Later. Steve. Venard started upon
the-trail of the robber, yesterday morning,
and tracked him some distance. In_ the
afternoon he accomplished the object of his
search by finding ‘a dead Chinamen, near
Laird’s old ditch, at the-foot of Sugar Loaf.
." A-man who resides at Selby Flat, saw the
— Chinaman laying. there in the morning, and
enquired what ailed him. John rephed that
he was “muchee sick.’ The: place where
the Celestial was found was niore than half
a mile from the Manzanitaclaims. He had
some amalgam, and tools tor “cleaning up.”
The wound that closed his thieving eareer,
was in the side, just above the hip, and was
undou btedly inflicted by Stewart.
The Coroner held'an inquest over the
_ body, last,evening.
Narrow Escape.—A child, son of Mr.
Sangunetti, aged. about six years, narrowly
escaped drowning on last’ Sunday morning.
Several little oneswere engaged in playing,
some ‘forty feet above the dump of Goodman
& Co.’s new flume on Gold Run, when the
boy was pushed into the flume by one of his
companions. At the time about 300 inches
of water was running. The flume extends
