GENERAL GRANT As Successorn.—We
are informed by telegram, on the authori‘ty of the Herald, that. a bill will be intro.
“®ilided into Congress. providing that Gen: .
eral Grant’ shall be seting “President..
case of the remoyal of Johnson. It may
bé that this is true, but unless the memk ‘coming doth ‘the sclithibant F bbhistidciner*e we
“a6 ot believe any such dill could be
‘ "passed. That Grant possesses all the
qtialifications of a soldier and has proved
“himself ‘a * great military genius nb one
will deny. But tm his whole record we
‘fail-to find any evidence of great administrative ability, and in his expressed opinions upon the questions of the day we see
tinnistakable evidence of weakness as a
“'"Wé'would not detract. from the great
cdglory’ which surrounds the name ofGrant.
_ Hig. successes in the field will ensure him
place in history beside the greatest sol'. diers of the world, and his deeds will be
¥élated ‘with pride by the American for
“ages to come. But we must remember
‘#hat the qualifications of a soldier do not
include the ability requisite for a statesnian. It will not do at such a critical moment as the present to hazard the weal of
the nation on an experiment. . During the
early part of the contest between the Executive and the Legislative departments
of «government, ‘Grant, instead of asserting his position as an American citizen,
preferred to evade the question, and shield . .
__ himself by asserting that the President
,was his superior and he could not take isgue with him: ‘This was done at a ‘more
critical time than when rebel cannon were
~ “thundering at the national capital, and all
the influence of loyalty was required to
thwart the .designs of ». treason servitg
President, Instead of resisting the evil
Grant suffered himself to be a shelter and
attraction for Johtison in his raid through
the West. Grant we believe is: perfectly
‘#ound, but we have no evidence that he is
aheewesibinrin
safe. ‘There are many men of undoubted
administrative ability, sound judgment
and loyalty. Let:such’a one be selected for
the suceession, for the country cannot afford
to experiment at so momentous a crisis.—_
\{ Bhete is another objection to Grant whi
whoald not beoverlooked. He holds t
highest military position in the lahd, abd
. ‘though there may be no danger from him,
/hisappointment would establish a preceE pnt which might give trouble in after
imeg, Phe military and executive powef united in the hands, of a bad and amone man might rain the nation. It
ould be far better for Congress to permit
i ‘Johitson to remain ‘until the end of jhis
‘term than that he'should be succeeded by
Grant. We do not believe any such proposition will ever tech the assent of Con*
