It is said to be the intention of the citizens of Auburn to invite Company “©”? of this city to assist in the Fourth of July celebration at that town. Ii the Grass Valleyans don’t get a move on.in’respect to their celebration they may be too late in various ways. Two brothers who had been mining in Washington district came to this city the other day and having a disagreement over money matters settled it upon their arrival by a fight on Broad street in which the. aggressor was knocked down twice. 2 Don’t Say it.. ' Don’t say ‘I ate a hearty. meal’; Don’t say ‘‘over five hundred people rj were present,” but ‘‘more than five hundred people’; you do not walk over, but across the bridge; your view is not. partially correct, buat in part t. subject, but well informed; you are not stopping at a certain hotel, but . staying; don’t'say “I told him thatI was an 8o0’clocker,” but “I told him that Iam an 8 o’clocker’’—things that -] are as true now as at the time spoken of should be state:l in the present, not the past tense. Don’t say ‘I heard from him at length,’’ but ‘‘at last’’; not *‘who does the book belong to?’’ but ‘‘whom does the beok belong to?” This is a very common mistake. And another one equally common is, ‘this much I tell you,’’ instead cf ‘thus much,’ ete.
