“THe State Dest.—According to a
Statement made by the aber nee pm

which bonds to, the sum of $377 74000. awe
' issued for the civil debt of the State, and
$1,548,000 for the relief of and bounty to
soldiers during. the rebellion. All these
bonds bear 7 percent: ‘interest, and. the total annual interest on them i is $372,540.—
The State has besides promised to pay}
$105,000 annually on the bonds of the

so that the total yearly burden for interest

STATE PopULaATion.—The California
Teacher for January gives the number of
thildren-in-the State, undér fifteen years
of age, at 136,908, These figures are obtelnet ees the: census of the School Marhalf a mittion dollars. To pay this inter= of the bonds, says the Alta, the State lev: 4és a tax of 56} cents on each hundred dollars of taxable property, and the property
i that pays taxds is about $180,000,000. The
Controller's table gays the total valuation
is-$200,000,000, but from this about $20,000,000 must be deducted for exemptions,
double valuations, mortgages, and so forth,
on_which no tax is paid. The yield of 563.
cents on $180,000,000. is about $1,000,000,
the remainder for redemption. At that rate
———the debt ought to be-paid offin-ten years.
The debt decreases half-million and the
taxable property increases ten millions an nually,so the prospect: before us is a_good
one. The total State tax on the $100 of
taxable property is $1.13, of which 56}
cents are for the funded debt, 30% for general expenses, 10 for the capitol,-8 for
schools, 5 for military purposes, and 3 for
the Insafie Asylum.

THE GRANT MINE.—The U. S. Grant
Company; Meadow Lake Township, have
worked their mine and mill without interJ ruption during the Winter. A bar of gold,
~wwemaw=n the result of one, week’s run of five stamps,
valued at between twelve and -thirteen
hundred dollars was brought down to this
city on Friday. The ledge is looking first
rate and the rock is yielding handsomely:

THe Nevapa ~ LEGISLATURE: —The
Legislature of Nevada will assémble at
Carson City to-morrow, ard, the members
are already beginning to take lodgings at
the capital. During the session, a Senator, the-suecessor to Nye is to be chosen.
Whitman, Nye; DeLong, Fitch, Blasdel
and Winters are spoken of, but-it is generally conceded that Nye ‘is the strongest
man. In case of_a long “contest he may
be defeated by Blasdel.or Whitman, but
the chances of other candidates named are
