The tables were then spread,
and a superb banquet, prepared
by Antoine Tam, was partaken of
by the brethren of the mystic tie.
It was certainly one of the finest
banquets ever gotten up in this
city. During the festivities, Past
Master E. M: Preston presented
the retiring Master, H. Stansfield, who had acted in that
capacity for three years, with a
beautiful Past Master’s jewel,
made in this city by C. J. Bran
the jeweler. The jewel is gotten
up in a style equal if not superior
to any made elsewhere on the
coast: _After-dn—heur—spent—indiscussing the. good things prepared, toasts were given, speeches
made, and a glorious time-had_ by
all present. Ata late hour the
banqyet broke up.

For some time the fare from
this city to San Francisco and return within thirty days has been
$14.80. Most. of our mer‘chants, and those who are
posted. on the new rate, have
taken advantage of it. Although
ithas never -been advertised or
posters issued to that-effeci, the
Chinese merchants of this city
and up-country have “dropped on
itXin some way and during the
past few days on going to the Bay

Washington’s Birthday Party.
The fire and military companies
of this city contemplate giving @
joint party at Hunt’s
month in celebration of Washington’s birthday, which comes on
Sunday, the 22d of next month.
The party will.probably be held
the Friday evening'preceding the
22d. The very best of music will
be furnished, the hall will be
handsomely decorated, and the
various committees will labor to
make the. party the largest and
the best of the year. The details
have not been arranged yet.
