PRINCIPLES —There 18 © Latin provers
that “whom God wishes to destroy, He
first makes mad ;” and we are much in
étror if. the immigration movement
does ‘not show symptoms of that madness which is the precurser of sure de
struction. The ‘immigration bill how
} should not.be.paid.—Sac. Record.
to
it necessary argc that. the: St
pdebt shold'not be -paid, ie a® argument against the scheme.” If the
TRANSCRIPT refers to. our proposition
in regard to the State debt we can only
say that its remark contains a most
unjustifiable misstatement of the facts.
We never argued that the State deht,
The Record, puts ona shoe we. did
not intend for it. We were not'aware
that paper was the only advocate of the
as one which no Leyislature would be
reckless enough to pass. It bears its .
death warrant on ite face. It is quite
providential that sieh a wrong as itis}
the object of the Immigtation Union to
accomplish,-should be supported_bya
bill so palpably objectionable, and it
would be well for society if every fraud
were supported by means so. well caleu. grant Union in San Franeiseo,-where
measure, or that it was “one of tlie men
reference-to the meeting of the. Immi‘the bilt-was-discussed by Hopkins; Beit}
and others. ‘These are the men that
‘are nursing the bill, and. in that discussion one of the speakers ‘advocated an
extension of time for the payment of
the State debt in order that $300,000 .
rattle on the snake’s tail that warns
you, to avoid the poison of its fangs.
Mr. Hopkins’ “Common Sense”-pamphlet reminds us of the’saying of Voltaire
that “common sense is the most uncommon of all the senses.” A scheme
for the. importation of a class of people
it is -cbiefly such that the pamphlet
plates,). may perhaps bedisinterested,
but it isnot wise. Itis unjust to the
immigrant, while, with regard’ to the
State it is impohtic. -The man who,
after paying expenses from Europe,
lands in California with . sofficient
means to pay an instalment on a farm,
to purchase horses and implements, to
erect and furnish a cabin and to procure seed, feed and provisions for one’
year, is already a man of independent
means: He does not need to emigrate,
and cannot better himself by doing so.
Asa rule he does not himself -work.;
and we don’t want men unaccustomed
to work. He usually employs from six
to twenty men on his farm; and in
California, years of wil must pass-before
he can afford te-hire a single man. He
enjoys a certain social consideration,and
even a dignified ease at home ; here social consideration does not exist, and
ease cannot be had withont starvation.
The man who could bring to California
sufficient funds to be an object to any
land speculator, is comparatively rich
in a country where the people are poor,
labor cheap and prices low ; and even if
he were a desirable sort of immigrant,
-which in most cases he is not,-to entice
him from the surroundings in which
he has grown up, and which farnish
but indifferent training for pioneer life,
were a piece of cruelty which we hope
the Legislature will not countenance.
Fhe-men we want ate those to whom:
work has been a necessity at home, who
are ready to doff their coat, roll up their
shirt sleeves, and go vigorously to the:
plow. One thing in counestion with
the Union and its pamphlet is noteworthy. Their plans seem to be laid . .
with a view of locating the immigrants
onthe lands of the speculators. «. This
is remarkablein presénce ‘of the fact
that there is Government -land which
_ the settler may have at Goverment
price, or even for nothing. The Union
seems ta have got into company of
questionable reputation, and we must
be excused for saying so. The immi
grant who is wise will receive with
caution the favors of speculators and of
those who aid and abet them. A Tro.
jan will do well to suspect the Greeks,
even with the gifts in their hands.

TaLL SWEARING.—To prove that
the Cau had thedargest circulation of
any paper in San Francisco, its-proprietors placed the sworn statement of thu
pressman at the head of its colunihs,
declaring the regular edition to be 15,.
750 copies. The Chronicle, as an offset,
came Out with a statement similarly
verified, claiming a circulation of 16,000
copies daily. The Tribune, being the
last to speak, followed with three or
four certificates, showing @ circulation
of 17,500, It now devolves upon the
Gall either to “call” -or—“raise”-these
manifest “bluffs” on the part of its rivals.

CoLniston.—THureday night,says the
Grass Valley Uy.ien,-George Wilson
was going from town, to his ranch,
about’ a ‘mile east of here, and was
driving’ rapidly on Bennett street. Mr.
Simmons. was coming into town,
on the same road, driving a span of
horses. Both turned to the same side
of the road and a collision.of horses occurred, A shaft of Wilson’s vehicle
struck one of Simmons’ horses between
the shoulders and penetrated to a con
siderable depth, severing an» artery.
The wounded horse died in a very few
minutes after the collision. We do
not know which of the gentlemen, if
either, is to blame for the accident.
