which will long be remembered by
those who winessed it. The day was
perfect, bayonets flashed in the sunshine, banners and plumes waved,
bright colors glowed everywhere, and
to heighten the effect of the scene,
one soldier, overcome by the heat, fell
fainting on the ground, and was carried from the field by comrades.

sealed envelopes. This morning they . —
were given to Gen. Sheridan, who will
open them at-three o’clock this afternoon on a stand in the Drill ground in
presence of all the troops, and present them to the successful competitors.
Of course there will be some disappointments, but the judges have had
avery difficult and delicate duty to
perform. The militia organizations
which participated in this competition
are among the best in the country,
and where many are excellent the task
of deciding between them is very
hard. Where one was perfect another
was defective, and vice versa. Of one
thing the soldiers may be quite certain, and that is that the judges will
not rate them as did the audience always, for errors of the manuel, which
were invisible from the grand stand,
were from the judges’ standpoint,
gross mistakes, and their decisions
will have to be accepted without question.
In the gossip of the camp-the prizes
‘have been distributed among the Toledo Cadets, the Lomax Rifles, of Mobile, the two San Antonio companies,
the St. Paul companies, the Muscatine Rifles, of Iowa, the Louisana
Rifles, the Vicksburg Southrons, and
two Washington companies. Each
has warm partisan admirers, who expect one of the higher infantry
prizes for their favorite organization,
and one hears extolled the merit of
this company and criticism of the performances of all the others on every
hand. No doubt there were technical
faults in the maneuvers of the most
accomplished companies which were
not discernible to the public, but as I
mentioned before, no one knows, at

Yesterday was Sunday, and, according to agreement, Rev. T. DeWitt
Talmag? preached, at the Diill ground
from a little, awning canopied pavilion in front of the grand stand. But
to my surprise at first, the military,
all except afew hundred, were conspicuous by their absence. Do not
imagine that Mr. Talinage fell short of
an audience in consequence. He was
greeted by a congregation of fifteen
_ thousand strong. About ‘seven thousand five hundred people paid a quarter to get inside the inclosure and sit
or stand anywhere within sound of
his voice, and fully as many-more paid
fifty cents for a chair on the grand
stand.
While the sermon was in progress
the soldiers were over at the camp
ground fixing up for the dress parade
which was'to take place at its close.
In due time they marched into the
Drill ground to the music of their different bands, and during the whole
week a more effective scene was not
witnessed than that last dress parade.
The troops were massed in battalions
across the entire greensward, and
_-yery skillfully placed as regarded their
yaricolored uniforms. Many of the
uniforms were striking, others brillfant and eyen gorgeous, ‘and all conE. A. Tompkins,
