ute &e, NT rth iT et ee) OVOE ness, awe Wo Wile siaVétiing tha other day with an acquaintance who has followed mining . “ for many yeats, and he informed us that, since 1854, he had taken out $25,000 worth of gold, all done by his own iabor with the exooption of about $500 which he had paid for hired hélp. He had worked faithfully, either at prospecting or mining, always on his own account, and the result of his labor may be. considered as the average luck of a miner who’has worked in sixteen years. At first thought, and taking sam in-view;-one might suppose —the total that Our'titimer had been very successful ; ‘but_.when we come to reflect ‘that the. receipts of his labor only am ouiited to a little over $1,500 a year, we can not say his mining operations have been especially ' ‘profitable.. Very few men with that income would be able to save-anything over expenses. A mechanic or 4 farmer, working steadily for that time, would lave made as much, and the farnier, in addition, would have had his place improved, so that he could feel hie Had: resource to support him in his declining years. Some of our. miners . Oss have done far better, and others not so well; but the prospect of doing better, and of making a lucky strike, is the. charm that attracts the miner to his vocation. ~ Siecanamae Rich Strike. A very rich strike was made in tie Pitts burg mine two or three days ago, which promises to be extensive. On Wednesday, . rock thrown out by a single blast was estimated to contain at least fifteen hundred dollars worth of gold.. One piece of rock, as large as a nail tings * was literally seamed with the precious metal. This was broken up and thrown into the batterries, as well as the most of the other specimen rock taken out, superintendents having found long since that it does not pay to keep specimens for exhibition. The gold shows plainly in the ledge, and it is not known how far the poekct may extend. ‘Some of thé’ rich belts in the upper levels yielded _ large sums of money, and this has the appearance of being one of the richest and most extensive ever found in the mine. Waste of Timber. The Fourth of July Committee at Grass Valley request the owners and occupants of houses, especially those who live on the principal streets and along the line of the * procession, to decorate their places with evergreens, so as to shade the sidewalks, This has become the custom m mining towns, young cedars being mostly cut down for the purpose, and the destruction of thé growing timber in this manner is painful to thoughtful persons. --The number of cedars destroyed for a Fourth of July celebration in such towns as Nevada and Grass Valley, if allowed to grow thirty or forty years, would furnish lumber to build a respectable city. This wasteful use of growing timber will go on until the land has all passed into private hands, when the ata nia ces of the young trees, The owners of this mine. are actively enpape th ai mmr : ing other repairs and improvements in mill. They expect to have it running in ten Gayé'or two weeks. We sawa letter yesterday from one of the men working in to improve, and the prospects become more favorable the further they get into the ledge. Mining in Little York, A gentleman down yesterday from You Bet informs us that mining has been very brisk this season throughout Little Yok township. The water in the ditches is holding out equally as well as last year, and nea#ly ali the claims that are fairly opened have” paid well. ‘The cement claims of Brown Brothers have been yielding immensely. The gold yield of Little York . Tee eters. ty mw of . Duteh Trial of Doolin. This case is dragging along very slowly in the District Court, the evidence being . all reduced to writing. With Se nana es ee cence ee -fera cibeetmeman The Giewuanion redated almost entirely to the reatlers, all appear. ing to acquiesce in the report of the ¢ommittee on arithmetic. So far as we heard the discussion, the weight of 2 eager was decidedly in favor of retai the rréaders. The report of the<écttanition, pre , was approved by two majority—20 }. substitute, .
