address the assembly. Mr. Clark responded by giving a speech of ' beauty and: -strength/ His appeal,to the
young .men to stand’by theircountry,
and bravely support the’ principles
of frue Americanism, was particularly well received. It is to be hoped
the young gentlemen will be made
good of in the good cause hereat (ie Sargent then came forward ahd after being warmly greeted
by men of all parties, made a speech
so full of logic and facts that it seems
impossible for any party to succeed
in_ any effort to successfully contradict them. This seemed. to be.the
conclusion of the great assembly
present. After giving some rousing
cheers for the speakers, and for the

his ‘army, and he may call on ‘Gévernment for troops and gun boats to quiet the insurreetion, as he did in. the
last Presidential election. A correspondent. of the Chronicle, writing from

7 o'clock, Camp Colton was the.
scene of mutinous conduct. on the
part of the énlisted men’of ‘the command, caused by .the.amount and

below the scale and of inferior quality. At breakfast call the command
was marched to the table in the customary manner, and at the command,
“Take seats!’ the men did not take

the table. and. threw it outside the

Democracy have been enough to disgust any of the converts to Haight
who ever possessed any genuine Republicanism, and the present-year affords an opportunity for the wayward
to returh, Which many, we Are happy to say, are improving. Governor
Haight has disappointed many of the
conservatives who voted.for him in
1867, on account of his close alliance
with the chivalry elem@iit, and even
the Irish wing of the Democratic party feel ver} lukewarm iti his ‘behalf.
Furthermore, ‘he is not the man he
professed to be. A nominal opponent of railroads, he has signed eighteen subsidy bills; an Elder in the
church, he has legalized lotteries and
opened the floodgates of gambling;
a professed friend of the workingman
he has bartered away all'their inter.
ests; an advocate of truth and morality, he has ereeted monuments at the
public expense and ‘taken to himself
the credit.of paying for them out of
his own parse; a man loud in his talk
for reforms, he has created useless offices and subsidized his ‘‘bread and.
butter brigade’’ in a manner, that
would almost! bring a blush of shame
to the cheeks of a ward politician.
this isone great reason. why the chan-,;
ces for a, Republican triumph in September next are so brilliant and flatand his hypocrisy.
Again, the Republican ticket, taken as a whole, is probably the best
ever presented to the people of California, and all the elements of the party are represented by their very best
men. Itisour happy privilege to
vote for candidates who are not only
fitted for the positions for which they
are named—then of ability, character,
and sound priticiples—but they are
also the uninistakable choice of the
gréat mass of the memibers of the party. ‘The willof the opedyilehas ‘not
been thwarted by the politicians, and
hence we find the ticket ‘enthusiastically received all over the State.” In
the camp of the enemy, the case is
widely different.’ While amajority
of the Democrats may have considered Haight as the most available man,
they have no regard for him other
than as he can serve the purposes of
the campaign, and several of the other nominees are positively objectionable to the rauk and file of the party.
The Germans have been entirely: ignored, and even worse than ignored,
for they have been insulted by the
nomination of Barry for State Printer, who has been engaged for months
in defaming them and the land of
‘their birth. . The chivalry Democrats
have ustarped nearly all the places
and left. the remnant of old ‘War’
Democrats out in the egld. There is
no enthusiasm in the ranks, and several of the leading Democratic newspapers profess indifference as to the
result.
Under these circumstances, and for
other reasons that could be named,
the Republican party is almost certain, to-carry California: at both the
general and judicial elections, It is
true, that there must be good, strong
earnest work, but the'heart of every
true Republican beats warmly for the
fight,-and it is evident that our forces
will all be on the ground to battle well
and faithfully to redeem the State
from Democratic rule. The glory of
the triumph, the importance of the
victory, and the benefit of the result
cannot be over estimated.
