The Grass Valley Union publishes.
the following record, of Hon Wm.
Watt's business caréer: He came to
the United States: in 1848, and for
several years before coming to, California followed his vocation on
-xeamsbip tines—in the year 1850
ately took up bis residence in Grass
Valley, where he continued ‘to reon coming to Grass Valley he engaged in miniog; and has always made
it,the-_business of bs life. _He carly
operated in this district in both
tase and querts wining, being.
soon joined by his brother Robert,
and together they were partoérs in
subsequent important mining enterprises. He worked in gravel’ on
Vike Fist, and quartz at Sebastupol,
und cn Gold Hill in 1854 mined. in
quartz on the same ground that he
afterward erected bis residence upon

tue sane time he became interested
in quariz mining on Massachusetts
Hill, which afterward became: noted
for its riches. In the yeur 1855, he,

Judd und Joseph O*Keefe, became
the sole owners of the Massashueet's . .
_Inine, which was worked with great . —
success fora number of years, and

As the nine was located under the
square claim system, in due time
its stopes were worked out and work
suspended, In 1865 the Eureka .
‘mine was,purchased by a compa: y,
of whom the Watt Brothers were
‘members, from Frivot & Co., and
William, Watt appointed Superinten—

the whole life of the mine, during which time it y-elded a vast
amount of treasure, being recognized
far and wide, for years, as the rich‘eat yold. mine of the State. This
propeity was exhausted last year,
and operations discontinued, but-he

RIGHT WAY. AND WRONG.
The Eareka Sentinel says that
mining like all other business, must
be oondueted with economy, and
wants a practical miner at its head,
Nearly all failures of Eastern investmounts have been caused by sending
o ont eome friend or relative of some
effshe company to tuke ohurge of the
mines, who has not. the slightest
idea of how ailwer and, \gold mines
. ‘aro found, let plone how they should
be worked. Theory isgood and
' practice is better, and theory and
* prastioe are above either, alone, Let
your metallurgical atadents go into
the mines and there learn to sewing
tha pick, to drill, to blast; ‘and go .
distinguish ore from barren rock; let .
them goivte the field and beeome:
familiar with the practical paxt of
mining life, and then less money will
be thrown away and squandered, and
many a valuable property in plaes of
haing condemned, will be made to
yield many retu:ns for the money inPROBATE COURT.

MORE ‘RUNAWAY BOYS.
Six Nevada City boys, sons of highly respectable parents, ran away from
home op Tuesday morniny last, and
have not since been heard frotft: They

years, The Wanderers are well protion, and from hints let drop among
their playmates before starting, have

having a grand hont. Asitis, the
probabilities are that the disturbed

small boys. We opine that the javenjlé adventurers will shortly, tire

ONERAL OF WILLIAM WATT.
“The funeral of the late Hon. Wm.
Watt, at Grags Valley, was the largest ever known in Nevada. county,
and one of the largest that has. ever
occurred in the State, It was.a fitting testimonial to the memory of a
man who had been loved for his simple ‘worth, and was now mourned as
a departed benefactor of humanity.
. All business was suspended, and the
enfblems of the sorrow which prevailed in all hearts. Work iu ail
the mines was to a great extent dispensed with, and almost the -entire
population turned out to pay the last
tribute of respect to the man who
had been the representative. miner
public buildings were draped with .
Dr. G. W. Tyrrell, Robert Hamilton
Geo. Gilbut and others. J. H. Neff,
W.A. Himes, Jas. Mahon, M. Lobner and many more from Colfax.
‘Ts would be difficulty to estimate
the number of persons who attended
the funeral; but they would aggregate several thousand. ,
