SIX MONTHS.$3.50. ; THREE MONTHS.. .$2, It Paid Strictly in Advance, $6 per year, Nevada Cointy Official Press. “WEDNESDAY...JULY 11, 1883 ——————— EE Presipent Artuur has given up catbe.trip to Yellowstone, He says teucs-.bhat it will have to wait until he is a private citizen and can with propriety get out of reach by telegraph for & week or two. When he inquired last week of a Signal officer how long it -would-take to run a military telegraph temporarily to Yellowstone Park from the point nearest to it on the Northern Pacific Railway, ay his idea was that it might take a week, and. would probably cost $500 or $600, which he intended ‘to pay out of his own pocket. He found however, that it would take more time and very much more money than he had estimated. The President thought this too high a price to pay for a picnic among the Geysers. He says he has deferred~his trip until the summer of 1885, Ex-Svrrocats Gipron J. TockEr asks the New York Sun to decide the claim of Wong Ching Foo and fifty or sixty naturalized Chinamen to register vote at the Fall election. The Sun, while indorsing Judge Sawyer’s decision that Mongolians are not white persons within the meaning of the statute regulating naturalization, thinks some Chinamen may have been lawfully naturalized between the time of the ‘ enactment of the revised statutes and the passage of the Act to correct errors therein, February 18, 1875. BgERKELEY furnishes a. sensational atory, wherein the two chief characters are a young farmer from Antioch named Joy, and Magyie, a pretty cook at Terminus Hotel, It appeara that the rural swain, after selling his farm for $5,000, boarded at the hotel, and fell in love with the kitchen belle, She finally consented to matrimony, but the night before the wedding she went to her aunt’s in San Francisco, having repented her engagement, Joy is” going to Washington Territory. VERNON, this star-route juror who had fitsin the Court-room, is reported as having fallen heir to o large sum of money. In answer to ivquiries he says it comes from the estate of his brother, who recently died in Texas, owning a tine saloon worth several thousand dollars ani some mining stock worth sixty thou‘sand dollare. SatTorpay night Marshal Henry, of Greensburg, Ky., with Ben Bagby and four others, started to arrest James Owen, a desperate character on @ felony warrant. Marshal Henry was killed, Bagby mortally wounded, and the rest of the posse fled. Itis supposed that some of the others were wounded. Owen is still at large, Conzy Isianv had a sensation on i Friday night. An angered wife cow-’ hided the paramour of her husband, with whom he was dining at the Manhattan Beach Hotel. Several heavy blows were inflicted on the face and bare shoulders of the lady and there was much excitement, the dining-room being thronged at the time, : Forty American bicyclers are making a trip through the provinces of Ontario, (Canada, At Goodrich, Friday evening, they attracted an audience of 3,000. persous by some fancy evolutions in the streets, and a banquet;was given them in the Council chamber, They went to Brantford to spend the Sabbath, AT a temperance meeting at Milwaukee on Saturday, at which Mayor Stowell, a Democrat in politics, but of strong temperance views, spoke, there were several addresses, in which it was hinted that the Prohi. bition party of the country was preparing to nominate a Presidential ticket in 1884, ce Tux Philadelphia Balletin hag con~ cluded that the Democratic party has about the same respect. for Mr. Tilden that the Hindoo has for the Juggernaut. It does not know ex-actly what heis, but treats him with great respect for fear he might be something awful. : On Saturday in New York and Brooklyn there were fifty-one cases of sun-stroke, thirteen proving fatal. The highest point reached by the _ thermometer was 97 degrees in the shade. ; e t Oscar H. This interesting bit of news is from the Daily Report: A change will shortly be made in the Presidency of the State University. President Keid is an amiable gentleman, and has paid strict attention to his duties as the presiding officer of the institution, but unfortunately for the University as well as for himself he if not the man for the position, The University does not command the respect it deserves and is not strong enough with the people. Young men who should attend the University are sent to Eastern colleges, not because the . University course is lacking in any of the prime essentials but mainly for the reason that the head of the University is not active, enterprising and influential. The University needs a man of snap and the Regents are industriously seeking such a man, Ex-Sewator Conkling recently carried aham sandwich into court under his arm and ate it, and at least $500 worth of editors’ ink, editors’ labor and printers’ ink, labor and time have been expended in announcing the fact, Ex-Sreaker Keifer, being asked who-was tobe the next Republican President, replied: ‘“‘Old Tecumseh Sherman; you can just put that right down,” ' PostMASTER-GENERAL GRESHA\ has affirmed the validity of Key’s order denying the use of the United States mails ta the Louisiana Lottery Company. : Frees in the Oregon woods have destroyed a great deal of valuuble timber, lumber and other property.
