LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
_ Lrrortant’ TRIAL.—The trial of thecase of the Nevada and Sacramento
Canal Company against the South Yuba Canal Company, was commenced in
‘the District Court, yesterday morning.
Judge Hale of Placer, Judge ‘Belden and
Hawley & Williams appear for the
_ prosecution and A. A. Sargent-and A.
C. Niles for the defense. This suit-was .
commenced ‘in 1855 and has been: in
Court ever since, but nothing was done
in it for many years. During the past . _
two or three years many preliminary
issues have been tried and the case haé
‘been several times to the Supreme
Court. Property and water rights of
great value are involved in this suit.
THE OAKLAND CoLLEGE ScHooL.—
The next session of the Oakland College
Scheol will open on the 24th day of
July. This‘schoolis perfectly graded
and has three distinct departments with
their own teachera,recitation rooms and
dormitories. Beys desiring to prepare
themselves for business can do.so, with‘out pursuing the eollege course of study,

hay was yesterday sent to. Stockton, in
custody of Special Deputy Sheriff Gove.
He was taken up in Grass Valley about
two weeks since. He is at times very
troublesome, and had to be closely
watched while in jail.
HELD TO ANSWER.—Amne Bowen,
charged with assault with intent to
murder Edward Sherlock, in a “beerjerker” saloon at Grass Valley, on Sunday night, was examined before J udge
Byrne on Tuesday last. Sherlock received « severe stab which he alleges
was inflicted by Anne Bowen. She was
placed under bonds of $500 to answer
the charge before the next Grand Jury.

will take exeeeding great care to guard
against fires now. Everything is so
dry that a fire would spread rapidly,and
there would be little hope of staying
the flames. Let people look out for
their fires, and be carefal that children
are hot permitted. to play with matches.
