When Bill Michaels the woodchopper was brought to the County
Jail Tuesday and locked up to await
trial for murderously assaulting a
Chinaman at Graniteville, he said to
prisoner Smothers from Truckee:.
“I guess that heathen willdie, and
the beat-thing I cin do is to play off
crazy.” =
Then he set up a lond howling,
making the neighborhood echo with
his cries. Being over six feet tall and
heavily built, the other occupants of
the jail became frightened at his
threats to demolish them, and the
officers put him in a cell, telling him
he would have to live on bread and
‘water till he made up his mind to behave himself. This appirently _inthan ever.*_.
