ANDREW JOHNSON:
Corrox AND. GoLD.—"Thé cotton fata».

little in New York ; all.attetmpts to obtain it
from the South have fled ; the trading per.

tire dependence now is on the few blockade
runners that we may captare; and that will
be hardly ahandful for each mill ruoning:—
Under these circumstances there ix nothing
to prevent cotton being very dear—rendering it among rare articles and luxuries; and
thers is nothing te prevent cotton goods
advancing on present prices as much as they
have in the past; and nothing that we can
se6 to prevent a reduction wf production
either by driving tho mills to an ‘absolute
suspeusion or to short hours of labor.”
We have been talking of « supply from
Indi&, Brazil, and Egypt; but though they
may produce large efops, it will be of no
benefit to us if exchange rules eo high as to

all our victories, gold is now 286, with a

that was the specie valuation ; our exportations on the same valuation were not ones"

and from month te month. There is no
self-denial, nevér such extravagance before
since time began; money govs like water,—
Now. all these foreign inanufactares—andluxtries must be paid for in gold; and where

country aa in former dye, -but-it-is shipped
direct to England. We have two streama of
specio runving constantly to thy Bank in
London ; one from our own State that takes
the new gold, and the other from New York
that exhausts the wld stock. With these
suction hese in the vaults of our banking
houses and drawing up from the depths of
our mines, what is to prevent the advance
in gold? Sumething must be done to bring
down the price of gold. Success in the field
will not do it so long as the foreign impors

until then will the advance in the price of

EXTRAVAGANCE —When upbraided with
the charge of extravagence in the use of silks,
laces, etc., the ladies have always retaliated
that men were guilty of far greater extravagence in (he use of wines, cigara, etc. Recent
statistices regarding the anoual importation
of luxuries ghow the following: silks impor.
ted, about $27,500,000; -laces, $1,500,000;
embroideries, $4,500,000 ; total for luxuries
fur ladies’ consumption, $33,500,000. Wines,
over $4,000,000; spirits, $4,000 000; cigars,
$4,000,000 * total gentlemen s luxuries, $12.”
000,000. ‘Total, $45,500,000. ‘These figures
show that the extravagance of wouwan is
uearly two-thirds more costly than that of
man.
BuTLer.— Simonton writes the Bulletin
that Butler failed to perform what was expected of bim south of Richmond, and there.
fore, Grant was compelled to make a chenge
of base to the James to accomplish what
Butler did not. The force given Butler was
thought to be sufficient, but his military
abilities were not equal to the business—so
Simonton insinuates.

ASvuBJUGATED PEOPLE —The Circassians have at length been overcume arid subjugated by the Russians, showing that nums

Though the Circassians numbered but four
hundred thousand and the Russians siaty .

years to conquer and subdue them. The
war commenced in 1800, when Georgia was
wrested from the Circassians and tmade a
Russian Province ; but it has been only 41
care, oF since 1833, that the-war has been:
‘vigorously: prosecuted.” Then Schamy,
appeared in the field and with Kasi Molay
united the Circassians in defence of their
nationality. Kasi was killed in battle in
1833, and Schamy! continued the defence until he was taken prisoner a few years ago, .
