_ quantity of securities. She Daily Granscript. _. . Wawa cerry. CAL.” Friday, July 13, 1877. Imteresting News Items. Ina paper from a Penusylvania ‘town of some eigiit thousand people, we notice-a last appeal of a Fourth uf Jaly Committee for twenty-five dollara to. buy-powder: It was stuted thatthose who hid béden soliciting fands could hardly get anychirg. ‘Too poor to buy powder to tire a #a~ Fate on the Fourth! We talk of hurd times in Oalifuruia, but we are beginning to thiuk that we have no real conception of what that term imeans, L. P. Dexler, of Virginia Ciiy, received aletter from Miliw, bis ube soonding clerk, to the e¢ff:ct that his salary was insnfflsieut to support himself and wife, andhe took the money to get bimself out of debt. He also took the stock ledger aud a He iutiusates that'he will return the muney if they ' ‘do not attempt to fiua him; otherwise they will get nothing. eee In quarrel over a faro game at ‘Greenwood, Ariz na, two wen were killed on the spot, anc a third, a gambler, had #.vullet put in his head andinhisbreast. They ‘conperea’’ the knave and lost, and su they “passed in their checks’' wud were raked into the devil’s cush box. Pitkin, before leaving Washington for New Orleans, on ‘Tuesday last, gave),General Butler a souvenir which the latter will probably use on the floor of the House next winter. It is a coffin, sent to.a culored man Tavur<par, July 12th, 1877. . The Board met pursuant to, ads . journment.” Present, a full Board. G. G. Allan, President, presiding. The minutes of last meeting were read and approved. at The following demands against the county were exumined, allowed and ordered paid: _ On Road Fund. _ District No. 2—G, 8.8. Getchell, $225,District No, 5—M. M. Richardson, $155 20; Palmer Smith, $23; J. B. Brogan, $34 50; Buca Mill und Ice Co., $60; James O’Connell, $50; L. Voss, $250; G. 8. 8S. Getcheli, $78; G.S.°S. Daniel Collins, for extra services by four Deputy As. essors; $120. Inthe matter of the petition for the establisbraent of a new School School District;*’ heretofore set for hearing on this day, coming up for consideration, after due deliberation, sud the School Superintendent, E M, Preston, approviug, it-is ordered that the said districf be created with the name of the/Bunner School District,’ and with the following boundaries, viz: Commencing at the NE. corner of Sec. 15, Twp. 16N., Range 9 East; thencs West one mile; thenee South one-half mile; thence West one wile; thence South ove and District, to be-known as ‘Banner. Expensive Work, The Board of .Sapervisofs of San Francisco have let a contract for the printiog of the Great Register, at 16 cents per name, and the cost of the work will be $5,834 15, In every county of the Staten Great Register is to be printed this year, and the aggregate cost will be very large. It appears to us that the law requiring it to be printed so often, ought to be amended. Outside of the large cities there is uo necessity of having it done ofiener than once in 4 years, and at that time it.should be thoroughly overhauled; aud not contain names of men who have been dead for yeurs, and more particularly of these who have left tbe county*and State without having their registrations canceéled. I: is impossible for the County Clerks to arcertain who .are entitled to vote, and therefore they are compelled to have the list published asit appears on ,record. If some steps were taken’ by the Supervisors to ‘have the list overhauled, it would be @ great saving in the vost of printing, and be a better book of reference. Tnis matter should be well considered by the . proper offivers of every county. oo Cyompaign Meetings.:* During the cunipaiga there will be mavuy puodlic meetings at Grass Valley und this city. Excursion trains willbe run for ‘bose who desire to uttend. The mutter-of-charging 25 cents per head for the round trip to Grass Valley, and visa versa, is tulked of by those who have had to foot the bills for the trains heretofore. We think it would be w good idea, as it would be the means of preventing Bitter Christians. » Col. Bob. Ingersoll left for the Hast Tuesday morning, and left, we are afraid, with a dropof gall io bis heart, says the Stock Report. If not, then the Colonel is one of the sweetest tempered men that ever lived. It baying been represented to the lecture lawyer thas the charituble societies of the city were not too flush of funds, he agieed to donate the proceeds of a finul discourse to three be‘pevolent corporations. . That lecture was delivered on Monday night, the audieuce numbering neurly two thou. sand, all of--whow, including the Colonel himself and fsmily, paid for admission. Yet uot one of the directors ofthese svcieties came near Mr. Ingersoll, either whilst the adverlisements were ont or at the time of tbe lecture. He was neither thanked fur kis kinduess, nor cursed for bis infidelity, but left entirely aloue. Tbe consequence is that the profits of the lecture, about $450, ure aucluimed. This is pretty bitter, and only shows that though charity muy cover a wullitude of sins, it will not cover that of aibeism, Not a Candidate. = The Colfax ‘‘Enterprise’’ says Jas. Mabon, better. kuown as Denuis McCarty, is not a candidate for the Assembly on the Democratic side, as. many of our readers supposed. He looks at the glory of a few brief days in the Legislature as @ fraud, ap 6wpty bubble; something that won’t buy bread. We willbet a couple of quartz ledges, however, that if Dennis ‘went for’ the posish, he'd either get itor be the pvorest map in, Placer county before the camUnion Hotel. For mavy years we have made two medicines sujted to-the’atlments of a vustclass of sufferers. ‘Thousands of cures have heen made by them, and, in fact, the word failure cannot bevoupled withthem. But within the lust two years counterfeits of our medicines have sprung up, dangerous in their close imitation of our Lrade Mark. 'To secure the people, we have placed upon each genuine box of Holloway's Ointment the -fac simile of the signature of our agent, Mr. Jos. Haydock. To counterfeit is felony. Weshull relentlessly pursue any one who imitates this, with the utmost vigor of the law. ~We most earnestiy beg that the greut mass of the American people will ‘wid us in our efforts to protect their health, and belp us in our task of F bringing “these most—-unprincipled men to the bar of justice. Uniformly refuse to purchase Medicines purporting to be our’ unless Mr. Jos. cluydock’s signature is attacbed to each box of Pills or pot of Ointment, and the end will soon be reached.
