_At the Democratic ratification meetingm San Francisco, on Saturday
‘evening last, there appeared a form
"of appa: ently earthly mould, claiming to be Ned Marshal’, and andible
-eounds'are reported to have come
from’the ghost. We say ‘‘ghost,” be eause Ned Marshall has been dead a
_good many years, or ought to have
been, We say ‘‘ghost,” because three
in the specch uttered by the}!
ghost, it alluded to having recéived
"po nomination from the Democracy
in thirty-two years, and everybody . .
knows if Ned. Marshall had been
“alive in the last quarter uf a century
he would bave had at least a-dozen
nominations at the hands of the
Bourbons, or he wouhl have trained’
with every other party or faction of
» party, and tried for noniiuations iv
every one ofthein. We don’t believe
it was Ned Marshall, at any rate,
pot the real old “Doctor Jacob,” for
that one, like Washington, couldn’t
tell a lie—he left that wholly to
Gov. Foote—but. this counterfeit,
like the Tichborue claimnant, could
not keep track of himself. Thus the
wit of the ghost or subsitute, was
‘old and stale, aud the declaration
was made that he had ‘‘mixed in all
the free fights of the party for thirty
years.” Now Ed, Marshall, if alive,
wonld remember how he hacked
away at John Bigler and the Demoeratic party in kuow-nothing days,
aud what a ¢andidate he made ip
that-memorable contest. for United
States Senator, when he, ‘‘Hangman”
Foote, and “‘Ipsedoodle” Ferguson
were the candidates,»ny one of which
‘the people didn't wat badly, for all
were defeated and the election post—
poned another year, We don’t believe it was the old original ‘‘Doctor
Jacob” for another reason. He
would not three times with emphasis
allude to an event which occurred
° thirty-two. years ago, for that would
set ti.e young men of the Democ:atic
party to searching political history
to learn what that great event wag
that happensd thirty-two years ago,
and they would diseover that E. C,
Marshall, brother of Tom Marshall,
of Kentucky, was nominated for
Congress from California, and elected, or counted in, Curiosity might
praopt them to go aw little farthe:
and see what E. C. Marshall did as
Member of Congress, what gre:t
_ sneasure be brought forward, or was
identitied with, how he voted on this
or that proposition that involved human rights and human happineas;
and we know. the old genuine Kd
Marshall would not in his life. time
pr senses, or even in his dotage, challenge such an. investigation. Then,
again jt don’t™ look likely that one
of the pld simon-pure, -blue—graass
ibloods conld condessond to take a
momivation at the tail end of a ticket
headed by a Union Generil, and especially when a Demograt in the
flesh onght to be superstitions, knowing where Greeley, McClellan, and
Haneock led the perty. The time
was when Ed, Marshall declared the
Democratic party had become so
rovfen that the mag in the moun
held his nose as he sailed over it,
and that was less thin thirty years
ago. Certainly the party has not
improved its aroma since, aud Ed.
Marshall must, tu use his own expression, ‘‘be steeped in the essence
of his own odor” not tu sinell :the
all abounding putridity. One baptism of carbolic acid asa substitute
for every fifty of whisky tight
