Dorsey had purcliased some’ meat and went into the bakery-to getsome bread. While there, Butler came to the door and said: “You reported over the county that I knew about that murder at the bridge,” and immédiately pulledafives shooter and commenced . ’ firing. A sister of Mr. Hollywood was some bread and the first ball passed through the fleshy part of Dorsey’s leg and afew inches above the lady and lodged in the wall. Dorsey fell upon: the floor, but soon recovered and started out of the. door. A second shot was fired by Butler, the bullet lodging in the side of the door. Dorsey crossed the street, running through Rosenthal’s tailor shop, and a third shot was fired, taking effect inst, Dorsey was only hit once, and the wound is not at all serious. He was unarmed at the time and the attack was unexpected. We have never heard a case of more reckless shooting than this. Butler is the same hombre who had a shooting scrape with Holland some months since, He was arrested by Blaze, who handed him over to the proper officer; and he aaa QUARTZ AT MookzE’s FLAT.—The located by I. W. Hadcock, between Moore’s and Orleans Flats, is being rapidly developed by its enterprising owner. Little is really said outside, but enough is ascertained to know that it surpasses the most sanguine expectations. It contains a large amount of sulphurets, besides tree gold often seen with the naked eye. From present ape pearances it will doubtless prove a valuable accession to the mining interest in this vicinity. The tunnel has been driven ninety feet into the hill, the ledge being taken out all the way, which shows a uniform thickness of eighteen inches, mostly decomposed quartz. Ata depth of thirty-seven feet, attained through an incline from the center of thetunnel, the ledge is found to be increased in thickness and equal in quality, if not superior to that above. It is the.opinion of some that the rock . properly and systematically worked, would readily yield one hundred dollars ‘to the ton. It is the intention of a quantity of the rock, either to Nevada or Grass Valley, to have a test made. RicH Lep@E.—Reasoner and others have located a first rate ledge at Eureka, in this county, and a mill test made by Kidd & Co., showed the rock to be very rich. The ledge is six feet wide, two feet of which is sulphuret rock, and the remainder contains free gold. Separate tests were niade, and the sulphnret rock was found to -be worth $133 20 per ton,and the rock containing free gold averaging $2381. This value is shown by a regular mill test, and question. The parties say that the rock worked is about an average. May BE InsANE.—It is supposed by some persons that Joseph Butler, who shot at Dorsey yesterday, is insane.— The opinion is based on the fact that no cause existed for his attacking Dorsey, and the fear he has expressed of being mobbed since his arrest. He remarked to the officer when taken m in “the first degree,” and has several times spoken of telegrams being sent to the Judge from Grass Valley, and the feeling being stronger against him there than in’ Nevada. Probably the shooting has hardly been heard of in Grass Valley. Butler may be insane or he may be “playing possum.” . The ex. amination will probably take place on Monday, when we shall know. spe pene «arm tenbiaiion, She im nye =~ have used them.
