describes Donner Lake as the Gem of
the Sierras, in which it is set like a
diakgiond ih ebony. It nestles at the
base’ ofthat grim range, just two miles
from. the town of Truckee, whence it
is approached by a pleasant road. It is
much smaller than Tahoe, being only
three and a half miles long by one
broad ; batiits beauty will atone for is
diminutive size in theeyes of those who
are seeking the picturesque. It is full
of fish, surrounded by woods, and
hemuwd ih of three sides bythe Sierras,
oa the northernslope of which the railroad may be distinctly seen, winding
its way apward uatil it is lost to view.
At the foot-of the lake is situated a
pretty, cémmiodious and well kept
house. One of the curiosities of Donner Lake is the Echo Rock which repeats sounds in the most astonishing
manner, the intonations of the voice
reverberating again and again with a
pecitliarly beautiful effect. At the head
et the ake, which is reached by the
old stage road, and is a pleasant drive
of three miles, is the Lake House, another hotel.
ane
Extensive Mihing Field.
The recent-rich strike near Hennerfauth’s, by Pecktal and others, has had
an encouraging ‘effect upon miners who
are engagéd in opening claims in that
region. © The Pecktal claims are situated on a spur of the main ridge,
knownas Fillibaster Hill and not uu}
like in formation to Gold Hill, Phelps’
Hill, and other localities that have
proved rich, and some have yielded
enormously. ‘The bars on the river below were originally rich, but have now
been mostly worked out, and are
abandoned to Chinamen. There is an
‘extensive field for mining development
along both ‘sides of the main ridge,
which we hope to soon see occupied.
Much of the ground is vacant, and the
claims that are located can generally
be had on very fayorable terms.
‘Phe billiard tables at the National
Hotel are supplied with: Delaney’s patent cushions. These cushions are made
with a wire extending throngh the
rubber, which is 80 adjusted by screws
that they can be made more or less active as desired. We are-told by billiard
players that they are a great immproveinent on the old. cushions. It is said
his patent.
