THe NeW Mines.OMr. Tibbitts, of Or .
gan & Tibbitt’s Meadow Lake Express, a®
rived in town on Thursday night, through:
in one day from the mines,.He reports.
that the country presenta a busy scene, Almost every tree and stump in the immediate .
vicinity has notices posted. locating’ claiins.
"The Vifginidns rather outdo the Califor. E
nians when it comes to the heavy work of
prospecting. Our people have’nt-got over
their weakness for “top scratching” yet, but
the men. from silver land dig deep. At
Whitman’s camp, two miles. this side of . ’
Richport, twenty-five men are at work; and”
everywhere the miners are “going dows”
on their ledges. Some log and brush éabins ‘have been erected, and yesterday ‘the
people of Richport were expecting their
first shipment of limber from Sardine Valley, where a saw mill is in operation.. The
lumber is hauled to the head of Meadow
Lake which is more than two miles from the
site of the town and is boated down to the .
town. We understand it can be delivered
at. twenty-five dollars per thousand. We
had a conversation yesterday with the first
man who -has spoken dispargingly of the
He thiuks they are not so good
as teported. We cannot expect all who go
there to agree in regard to the mineral
wealth. Even in the palmy days of this
State there were doubters, but we are satis-.
fied that the Excelsior District is rich. All
who go there will not “strike” the leads.—
Mining is to some extent a game of chance,
and few there are who win even in the richest sections. The fact that some men fail is
no evideuce against the wealth 6f a country.
From Bowman’s to the summit the quartz
indications are as favorable-and the ledges
are larger than those of any other district in
the State, and if any dependence isto be
placed in these things, we may safely predict that within twelve months the mines of
the northern part of this county will be
ranked among the best on the coast.
Districr Count.—The District Court
has been in session during the week, but little business has been done. “It almost seems
ss though sueing and being sued were at an.
end in this section. Nearly allthe mining
titles are so clear that-few questions arise.
The ranchmen think more of making hay
than disputiug about right of possession, and’
the married folks .are all so contented that.

NEEDS REPAMING.—The ‘road near the
“bridge which spans the ravine on East Broad:
‘street, néeds some attention. Ou one ‘bide . Lo
of the bridge there is a heavy rise which
-makes'it difficult for loaded teams and injurious to-ighter vehicles. ‘The road ean be
improved at little ‘cost,’ and it should be
done.
For Excetsion.—Last Sunday, # couple
of teams heavily laden with provisions and
mining tools left Virginia City, says the Union of the 12th, for Excelsior. District, Nevada county, California. They were sent
out by: the Enterprise Company, who will at
ance commence work for the development
of their claim. A large shaft will be sunk
and work upon it will be pushed ahead day
and night—two shifts of men eng. employed.
