“SUNDAY, JULY 15,.1866.
—_—
" Tae Mesbow. Lake Distaicr.—In
‘an article published inthe TRANSCRIPT
‘several days ago, upon the subject of “Speculating and Prospecting” in mines, we
tJbk occasion to refer te the Meadow Lake
District. Our remarks the Sun construe
into a manifestation of jealousy, and besides misceostruing our language, accuses
us of misrepresentation. We think the Sun
ig unnecessarily sensitive, and that. we were
warranted by the fucts in our statement.—
'¥tis well known that few of the mining .
claime located in the new district have
been sufficiently worked to test their yad.
ue, and also that thousards of feet are in.
the market. We were led to this conclu-'
‘sion from the steck quotations which were
for several weeks published in the Sun.—
The prices “‘asked” and the “‘bids’’ exhibited, show an anxiety’ for speculation which
is not creditable. If the Sun desires, -we
wan quote from the preceedings of the Stock
Board to éastain us. A list of claims were
daily called, long enough to make the Pres-.
ident hoarse. It is also well known that feet
in Meadow Lake claimz, upon which only
n little top scratching bas been done, have
‘eéon in the Virginia market ever since the
aew District was discovered. If any one
believes that the spirit of speculation is not .
far more rife in Meadow Lake than the disposition to prospect, let them lvok atthe advortising columns of the Sun and see the anaeuncements of brokers, and then see the
umber of old Virgivia men who live by
speculation entirely. The Sun asserts that
not a dozen companies have been incorporated. To prove this, why did'nt the editur
refer to the teurth page of his paper, where
some twenty advertisements of mining corporations may be found. It matters httle
whether they are incorporated or not.—
Speculation goes on all the sume We
would have it understood that -we are not
Gnding fault with the District, but simply
making these statements for the purpose of.
showing the error of the Sun ia accusing us
of misrepresentation. We take equal 1nterest in the development of all parts of the
county and if the editur of the.Sun will take
the trouble to inquire, he will find that we
have done our share for the development of
the Meadow Lake mines. The evils of
speculation spoken of in the article to
which the Sun takes exception, had no refference specially to Meadow Lake, but we
endeavored to show that any speculative
value given to mines, tended to the benefit
of a few individuals, while it was the curse
ofthe country, and that wealth was addéd
aud resources developed only by thorough
prospecting. To ‘substantiate this we alluded to the past in this county and Washve,
and to the spirit now manifest in the new '
District. Our object is to add to the real
wealth of the county and the State, as far as
we can, and while we are always ready to
give credit for the good mines opened, we
are ulse ready to point out the faults and
detects in the system of werking them.
The District is undoubtedly one of the
richest mining localities on the coast. ‘There
is no other place where the prospect is
so flattering. The mines, in order to be
thervughly worked, must have “cup)tal, and
this can only be secured after they are developed by labor. ‘That some companies
wre hard ut work, aud sume guld is being
taken out “is true, but that many have
valy been worked enough to hold thew aud
ure now in the warket “for sale” is equal'y
true. We hope tu see a population of 6,0UuU
aut Meadow Lake ina year, and we believe
it will sustain such w population if the
miners will open their wines thorvughly.

Frenchinan, who, like many of his countrymen, had Wong _ahigh rank-emeng-men of
science, yet whodenied the God whu is the
author of all sciencéwas crossing the Great
Sahara in company wit Arab guide. He
noticed with a sneer that at tertain times his
guide, whatever obstacles might-arise, put
them all aside, and kneeling on the burning
sands, called on his God. ee
Day after day passed, and still the Araby
never failed, till »t last one evening the philosopher, when he arose from his knees, asked
him witha cantemptuous smile, “how do you
know thereisa God?” The guide fixed his
burning eye onthe scoffer for a moment in
wonder, and then said, solemnly, “how do J
know that there is a God? How did I know
thata man and a camel passed my hut last
night in the darkness? = Waa it not by the
privt of his foot in the sand? Even so,” and
he. pointed to the sua, whose last rays were
flashing over the lonely desert, “that footprint isnot that of man!”
SecreTary Harvwan’s letter to the serenaders, reminds the Detroit Post of two

Joe, flourishing his mutilaied member vigorously, “he’s there!”
A Toven Srory.—A “Confederate offi

our warin Blackweud's Magazine, has told
some pretty large stories, but nove quite
equal to this :
A Confederate soldier fell during the
progress of a battles On examining him it
waa found that a Yankeg: bullet had struck

was regarded as killed outright; but to the
officers surprise he found hima few hours
