WEDNESDAY, JULY 15th, 1868,
UNION TICKET.
FOR PRESIDENT,
GENERAL ULYSSES §. “GRANT .
gees For Vice Pfesident, +
_ SCHUYLER COLFAX.

Harmony AND Prace.—Harmony
in the government and peace in the
country depend oa the triamph of the
Republican party in the apptoaching
election. The policy of Congress is successfully inaugurated and the, reconstruction of the rebel Stites under that
policy is only a question of time. But
for.the factious and-ualawful interference of Johnson, and his usurpation of
the legislative authority, every one of
_ the Southern States-would have been
represented in Congress long ago. ‘He
: has disregarded and disobeyed laws
"Congress conferred by the Constitution,
by appointing civil officers and making
laws for the government of the South. etm States. He has seriously interfered
with the work of reconstruction, and
though he has been unable to defeat
--the law making power of government,
he has greatly retarded the work. Out
of this factious course, confusion and
disorder has sprung up, “yendering it
necessary to establish military govern~ments in the South and preventing
_. Congress from giving that attention to
“legislation which the interests of the
coantry demand. This course of John__.. son 'is endorsed by the Democracy, and
in case of the election of Seymour the
atitagoiism between the Legislative
and Executive branches of government
would continue. We have already had
_@ foretaste of Seymour's disregard of .
national law, in his course in regard to
the draft in New York. It will be impossible for him to overthrow the Con' gressional plan se long as the Senate
is loyal, and he would only continue to
* place obstacles in the way of recon gtruction. Should the ‘Democrats get .
control of the Executive and Legislative departments of government, which
is impossible, anarchy and contusion . .
would be brought upon the country, and .
the Ku Klux Klan would rule the South.
On the other hand Grant will command the respect of the people of the
South, and being in sympathy with
Congress harmony will be restored be_ tween the different-branches of government, Congress having passed laws
will have the assurance that they will
be administered with fidelity, and the
Legislative and Executive branches of
government working together for the
_/€oo0d of the country, will soon establish
peace and d government in the
gress will be enabled to devote its entire energies to the national
moon gh = 0 ge Taxes will
y> ightened and the country
entirely ard ape of treason, with States
harmoniously united, will enter upon
an era of prosperity unparalleled in history.

o
Mrs. Brennan, near Taylortown, (0.)
went out early one morning lately to
milk the cows as usual. Her prolonged
absence having alarmed the. family,
search was made and she was found a
short distance from the house, dead.—
She had filled her two buckets with
milk and was on her way back to the
house, when she was struck by light
ning and instantly killed. She was
“not found until nearly an hour after
the stroke.
Puts emigrants to to the United States
from the Province of Bosnania, in Prussia, and especially from the district of
Bomberg, are so numerous that, according to the German newspapers, several
villages are entirely deserted. oe
‘Tam New York Newsboys’ Home has
_ provided, within the past n years,
for 57,507 boys, and ored 4,000 to
relatives and friends, at a cost of $65,000, of which the boys paid $18,000.

Journal; and United States Commissioner of Mining, called on us on Mon-.
day. He has already traveled extensively in the mines, and to his thorough knowleige of theoretical mining
he isadding a practical knowledge of
the business and the wants of the mifi. ere. Mr. Raymond is now in this counTty for the purpose of obtaining material .
. for.-his report and desires. to, meet and
talk with all interested in ‘mining. At.
the suggestion of gentlemen in Nevada .
a meeting has been called at the. Court
. House on Thursday evening of this
week, when Mr. Raymond will address
the people on the subject of “Mining
Titles and a Mining School.” In the
‘government title to mines our people feel
}@ deep interest, more particularly because the legislation. of Congress ‘upon
this question will affect direetly-the in-,
terest of the entire community: The
mining school will be the means of.educating miners so that in a few. years
the business may be carried 61 with as
much system and as much certainty of
success as any other avocation. .We
hope that all who are either directly or
indirectly interested in mining will attend the meeting on Thursday night at
8 o’clock and hear Mr. Raymond.
A Correct ConcLusion.—When
Gen. McClellan was nominated for the
Presidency, he promptly resigned his
ition as Major-General in the army.
Ko one ‘supposesGeneral Grant will
follow his example.—Los Angeles News.
The Los Angeles Republican says :—
The conclusion arrived at-by the Hees}
is undoubtedly correct. Gen. Grant .
Grass Valley National says that. Grant has never followed the example of Me-.
Clellan, and: it is to be devoutly hoped
that he-will not-do so in this instance.
Had he imitated the celebrated grave
digger of the Chickahominy, we should
not now have had a country requiring
the election of a President, but in its
stead numerous petty despotisms, one
of which would have been founded on
the chivalrac principles always maintained by the Southern wing of Democshould rule absolutely the poorer and
less favored masses.

THe Grass VALLEY UNIoN CLUB.—
The Organization.of the Grass ‘Valley
Union Club was perfected on last Satuarday night, at the armory of the
Grass Valley Union Guard.. The loyal
racy will find that even in Grass’ Valley
Seymour will be hard pushed. We
learn from the National that the committee on permanent organization reported the frllowing . gentlemen as
officers of the Club: President, B. B.
Laton; Vice Presidents, R. Leech, 8
W. Lee, E. Coleman, J. K. Edwards,
John Bennett, L. M. Carr, A. Morehouse,
J. H. Wilcox and Jno. Parker; Secretaries, Geo. W. Dixon and Dan’l. E.
Bell; Treasurer, A. Delano; Sergeantat-Arms, Charles P. Bush; Finance. and
Executive Committee, 8. D. Bosworth,
W. T. Woods, W. W. Hobart, Dan. P
Holbrook, J. P. Stone, Aaron Clarke, G.
W. Fairhurst, Joseph Perrin, Silas
Blodget, J. M. Stamp, J. McDermott.
Constitution and By-Laws were reported . ,
and adopted.
Some Democrats, late members of the
Tammany Convention, are, says the
Sacramento Union, in connection with . ®
a few leading soreshead Republicans,
adherents of Chase, endeavoring to get
up a movement which will compel Seymour to withdraw his name, and failing
in that, that they will run an independent candidate. If Chase declines they
will try and 1 sécure the services of John
Q. Adam “They propose to hold a Conbaloney the 8th of August, at Pittsburg Pennsylvania, or at Cincinnati.

The younger one is-a great: favorite, and
after each difficult feat his “all right,

spinning feats are new and astonishing
The top spimmer performed some extraordinary feats in spinning tops upon the
edge of a sword, and on-a string across,
the stage. He also made a top run. ap
a string to the top of a stage, , and made
a paper: butterfly which darted about
like a live one. The théatre was
crowded on the first night of the Japs’
exhibition. The troupe give another
performance to-night.
