July. 15, 1876. e ‘County Indebtedness. _ Santa Clara County: is now indebted to the amount of $540,820 26, with a prospect of a continued inevease for years tocome. Thecounty is nbt at the éxpense,gf building reads over mountains or. bridging’ ~ gbrupt precipicee to make passuble highways, andits public buildings areno better in proportion to its population, than are those of this county. Santa Clara is yearly made richer by an increase of population . from other sections, who bring capital with them. We-can count among ita citizens, men who have taken a million of dollars made in -this eounty, and we supposd other sections have donated equatly as: liberally: Our county bas a public debt of only $28,45152, It -has commodious public buildings, good roads and bridger, and has » populaion teu thousand ‘less than has Santa Clara. The figures show that the talk about the decay of the mining eounties is‘all bosh. If Santa Clara county was to export a half dozen citizens a year, with an aggregate “ eapital of a quarter of a million of dollars, and keep it up for a score of years, then its productive resources might be bragged about. That is the process that bas been going on here fur that length of time, and keeps going on yet, and the county ie still prosperous, and can keep it ~up for a quarter Of a century more withont flinching. -We will tell Santa Clara County howto get rid of its indebtedness, If it will transport a few of our mines, and engage our Board of Supervisors to go-down there and run the niachine for a oouple of years; they will rid the. county of debt, and make more -improvements during the time than has been made during the past five years. We can furnish that county with capitaliets and with men who can bring # outall right financially, and not eripple ourselves: either. telia a Fishing. Fred Sackett has found out where to catch fish. He thinks Canon ereek up in Washington Township, . gota away with all the mountain streams. coveries, and as Rufe did not get enough up at Lake Independence, he has organized a party and will have Sackett pilot them to the-—desired spot. One pound of ground black pepper and a dewijohn of whisky. Ten pounds of sard and a -lurge jag of whisky. One canvassed ham and six quart bottles of whisky. . One paper of large Limerick hooks end a gallon of whisky in any old vessel you dou’t use about the store. Also, send one pound of white @ugar and a small jug of whisky. Hurriedly yours, R-—S——,° P. 8.—As we shall be gone several days, and as snakes are bad on the river at this season, my physician has just stepped in and suggested that we better take along a little whisky. Send it, and enter it in your books with other items above. Mr. Hinksen Again Unfortunate. . Last evening Add. C, Hinkson, Superintendent of City Schools, met with another accident, but fortunately no bones were broken this time, While going down the the back steps’ of his residence, using his crutches, he lost his balance and fell forward, striking violently upon the ground. The result was the severe injury of of the leg which was hurt by his accident at the Capitol a few months : and the limb commenced swelling rapidly. He was at once was obtained fas soon as possible. We could never gee the thing in that light. While white men have to undergo the~indignity when they enter the State Prison, why should Mongolians be favored. We have never doubted such a course wold put acLeck on petty Chinese criminals, and the result in San Francisco since the hair clipping ordinance was put into operation, proves it. Thirty cases had been reported since Monday up to Thursday, and four of them died. Those who go down now do so. wit . their eyes open. It isa wonder the disease does pot spread over the whole coast, Verdict, fort inside, where it cost four bits to see ‘town, and her’ seventy-five leading A Liberal Town: Prof. Leotard, the gymuast and juggler, with a full troupe, has been hovering around the sloughs of Stockton for a ntontb or more, trying to get tp a show that would, after paying for hall rent ané gas, afford him money énough to get out of town. Onthe Fourth he joinedin with the people in celebrating, aid helped add to. the attractions of the day, with an understanding that after a while he should have a house that would more than pay current expenses. Seventy-five of the liberal citizens of the city signed a paper tendering the Professcr a benefit . But when the important time arempty bemches. Not even the liberal signers were present. Stockton bas a number of . banks too, dad it is the.heudquarters of all the lunatics in the State, yet it does not seem to pan out well for Prof. Leotard: The local papers say the .musi¢ on the corner played by. the Professor's bund drew crowds, and vast numbers caine to witness the tight-rope walking which was free, and which took pluce before the show commenced, but all were too sharp to be inveiglea aud be seen. It was going down the grade near Rough and Ready, and near McSorley’s digging , when the wagon crowd, ed the horses forcing them into a run. There were only two horses hitched to the wagon, and there were eight pa sengers, the driver, and an and e press on the wagon. The brake would not ‘‘take hold’’ and the horses could not hold back the very larze load: ‘The whole ran off the grade, the horses being piled in the ditch and the wagou™ turning completely over, and over, and lighting upside down, with the wheelsin the wir. On the stage were Mrs. Jas. Early, Hon. E. W. Roberts, Rich rd Hales of Grass Valley; Mrs. ville; Mrs. Flynu, of Virginia City Nev. Miss Lizzie Grant, of Randolph Flat and.one other passenger whose name we didnotlearn. The driver's name is ©, A, Lewis, and he was driving his first trip. The ex-driver’s name is Churles. E. Sacks. Jadge Roberts, who was sitting on the front seat managed to make a jump before the staye turned over, but he nevertheless fell with considis somewhat bruised. Sacks escaped uninjured, and he and Judge Roberts quickly relieved the others from taeir unpleasant situation. The driver, Lewis is very badly hurt and it is feared that he can not survive his injuries. Hales had his collar bone broken. The others escaped with a few scratches snd bruises. The lady passengers were sent foiward with the same korses and in another wagon. The overtarn was a very fearful affair, und the wonder is that no more'damage was done.—G. V. Union. Occident. Nota little adverse critieism: followed, and some of ‘the knowing ones freely predicted the ruin of the horse. Recently. Dr. Dunbar addressed a letter of inquiry to Ocvident’s owner, and received the following reply: Dear Sin: Your lotter asking the cohdition of my horse Occident is at hand, and in reply will state that he seems entirely recovered, The Operation performed upon his foot by your sou, acting under your direction and instruction, was very thorough, and I think great ipjustice hus been done you by,.those who attribute Occident’s lameness as a consequence of your treatment.
