“LOCAL INTELLIGENCE,BUTLER, THE “SHoorist,”—Joseph
Butler, the negro whe shot Dorsey, on
Saturday last, is evidently insane —
Some three months since he lived: at
’ Eureka in this county, and from that
a
place he wrote.to-the District Attorney
several times, ‘informing that officer
* that the people wero very muchi incensed against him, and asking the protection of the law. This idea so possessed the fellow that he left Huréka.and . .
went to-Grags Valley. He is a barber
by trade. The District Attorney also.
received several letters from Butler,
while the latter was in Grass Valley, in
which he stated that the feeling was
stronger against him there than at the
other place. -On last Wednesday Butler
sent a telegraphic -dispatch to. Mr.
Caldwell;claiming the protection of the
law from the mob that was seeking his
life. Each time the District Attorney
persuaded him there was no danger.—
He said it was so and a day or two after
ie. _ he sent the méssage, hé closed up business and came to Nevada: Dorsey, the
makhe shot, had been his best friend
and Butler charged at the time of the
shooting, that Dorsey “had reported all
' over the county, that he (Butler) knew
all about the murder of Cooper and
Kyle.” Since his arrest he has manifested the same fears of the fury of the .
mob. *

THE Pawrastics.—Theopolus Lacruse, with his grotesque followers;.visited this city on Saturday night. Their
fantastic costumes and comical actions .
as they. marched through the streets,
preceded by a band which produced
_ ‘most discordant sounds, attracted great . Ae
attention. The proceedings at the thea-4
ter were humorous in the extreme, and’
the lecture of Lacruse was excellent in’
its way. We are sorry that the Fantastics were not better pafronized
INSTALLATION.—The following offtcers of Brooklyn Lodge, No. 46, I.0 of
0. F., were installed Thursday evening,
July 11th, by*Distriet: Deputy Grand
Master, W. C. Barker. I. Venox, N. G.;
‘S$. G. Lewis, V. G.; L. H. Hydeliff, R.
S.; Wm. Wright, Treasurer. After installation, the members of ‘the Brooklyn Lodge, together with several visiting brothers from Olive Lodge, No. 81,
partook of a supper got up atthe _tel
of P. Drunzer, when they returned to
the hall and danced until broad daylight.
“THE GREEK SLAVE.”—We are indebtef to Geo. R. Crawford for a copy
of “The Greek Slave,” published by A,
Roman & Co, Those who were delighted in the reading of “In Bonds” will be
no less pleased in their perusal of this
later book. Roman & Co are entitled
to great credit for the enterprise they
have displayed in issuing these books.
In matter they compare favorably with
thestandard novels from the Eastern
publication houses, while in typographical appearance they far excel.
Court Business.—Yesterday the
testimony in the case of the Nevada
the South Yuba Canal Company, pending in the District Court, was concluded.
This part of the case consumed four
days and to-day is set for argument.—
Each side is limited to three hours, and
it is understood that the arguments
will be made by Judge Hale, of Placer,
and Judge Belden for plaintiffs, and A.
A. Sargent for defendants.
_ Saw Mii Burnep.—Skillman’s saw
mill, sixteen miles above Nevada, on
» the Washington road, was destroyed
by fire,on Sunday morning about 2
o'clock. The lumber and logs were
saved It is supposed the building was
set on fire.
Districr Court—July 15th.—The
People vs Ah Tooie, convicted of marPelipe; “wee: yeuter in}
looked on with confidence by all who
have usedthem. At this season of the
year, when the system is liable to dis.
ease, they act admirablyias.a prerentative. Being an excellent tonic.and.
blood purifyer, and.a very pleasant bev-:
erage withal, they are bound to become’
very popular. .Sarsaparilla, one of the
best blood _purifyers, ‘is one of the in_gredients used.in the Bitters. Gregory:
