FOR PRESIDENT,
~~ GENERAL ULYSSES 6. GRANT.
SCHUYLER COLFAX.
SEYMOUR AND THR CaTCAGO Con_ VENTION.—Seymour, the nontinee of .
the Democratic party for the Presidency was chairman of the Chicago Convention which nominated McClellan
: for President and declared the war a
failure. At the opening of the Convention Mr. Seymour made a speech in
which he bitterly denounced the war.
Vallandigham, who was a leading spirit . ;
in the Democratic party ‘and who made
such exertions in the late Convention
to force the nomination upon Seymour,
told a confidential agent that if the reb' els could hold on one year “the peace
party would sweep the Lincoln dynasty
. out of political existence.” At this
filled with rebel emissaries from Canada. .
time.war Democrats were denounced
as bitterly as Republicans. In a speech,
Judge Miller of Ohio said :
“There is no real difference between
War t and an Abolitionist.—
They are links of one sausage, made
out of the same dog.”
At the time. of the meeting of this
_ Convention the city of oa
_ Vallandigham, who had lately been
‘South under sentence of ‘banishment
~~ for treason, where he had counselled
the rebels to hold ont only one year
more, was chairman of the committee
on resolutions. The second pealetion

The infamy of thie platform: will be
more readily appreciated when it is
known that all propositions of peace
‘had just been rejected by the Confederates upon any terms short. of the indepence of the Contederate States. In
July 1864,. Lincoln.issued: his order,
“To whom it: may concern,” in which
he said any proposition embracing the
restoration of peace, the integrity of
the Union and the abandonment of
slavery would be met with liberal terms
from the government. Davis in reply
to Jaques had just said :
s ey ob ig not, fighting for slavery, we
independence.”
At the parting with Jaques and Gilmore he said: :
“Say to Mr. Lincoln, from me, that I
Ghall_at any time be pleased to receive
on the basis of independence.
t will be “useless to approach me with
any. othér.”
The platform of the Deriocratic party
following directly upon these events,
did not mean. a restoration but a
division, Seymour had on the
‘month before the Convention enunciated in. New York the same doctrines,
and he fully indorsed this disgraceful
peace platform which was repudiated
by the people of nearly every State in
the Union—Li ncoln receiving 212 electoral votes and McClellan 21.

spectacles are not only easily broken,

cumbersome from their weight, he reconimends spectacles made of mica, such
as is used in stove doors. This substance is transparent, tough, is a nonconductor of heat, and so the eye
