COUNTY ani GIPY OFFICIAL PRESS
TURSPAY, JULY 17, 1866.
_—_——— .
ae
Wittow VAtier.~Witbin the past
twelve months a fiuurishing mining prospect
has opened in the vicinity ef Willow Valley. A twélvemonth since the ground
was hardly broken within the range of
the Valley, now,” large numbers of ininclines and shafts are sunk, and several
very fine works are in operation. The
population 1s nearly doubled, and two
very comfortable boarding houses ure
doing a] fine business. “The mines present
excellent indications as far as they have
‘been opened. The Talbot ledge, which was
discovered about a year since, has been
more thoroughly prospected than any other
in the Vailey. This, with Magnolia, Muntana and others, is lucated on the west bank
vf Shady Creek. From the creek a number
of small stringers, which are very rich and
from which a quantity of coarse quartz gold
kas been-takeo, run in a westerly direction
into the bill. These are supposed to be
feeders frum the larger ledges which run
through ‘the Valley. The locators of the
Talbot vorked the ledge by shaftand tunnel
‘to the water level, taking out rock that paid
from $25 tv $36 per too, when most of the
origina! holders weld out. Eddy of French
Corral, Marselus, Barton, and one or two
vthers now own the claim. This. company
recently completed spleadid hvisting and
pamping machinery. The buildingis thirty
by sixty feet, two stories bigh, and one of
the inost substantial structures in the county. The engine was ‘built at the Nevada
Foundry. It is of twenty-seven horse powerand is a splendid piece of work, The
beiler, furnaces, hoisting and pumping gear
all work charmingly. The Cornish pump
is used, and the water is lifted te the level
‘of the old tuanel. The incline has two
compartmetits, one for the pump and stairway snd the other forthe car. The rock. is
hoisted to the secund story. In every part
of the mine there is: plenty of room and
men can work to the best advantage.—
Fresh air is driven to the bottom of the inéling bya wind-pan. The incline, is sew
down 120 feet. They are running uuder the
ledge which is from two and half to thiee
‘feet thick. Itis thought that the grade of
’ the ledge will svon change and it will come
into the incline. Should it nut do so, a
_shvot will be run upto cutit. The Inet
crushing from the ledge pid $33, and since
its discovery money enough has been taken
out to pay the expenses of working und
erect hoisting works as good as any in the
county.
The next ledge south ofthe Talbot, is the
Montana, owned by Mohler & Cu. An incline has been sunk on this claim to the
depth of 80 feet. The ledge is well defined
aud shows on both sides uf the incline from
top te bottom, Reck erushed trom this
incliow paid from $16 te $50 to the ton.
Further southis the Magnolia ledge, owned by Carr & Co. Several shafts have been
sunk upon the ledge and rock taken out
which pnid as bigh as $40 to the tun. The
average of the ruck is from $2U tou $25 per
tea: The shaft in which the cowpany. is:
now at work is about 40 feet below the
surface. ;
Kawt-of these claims, on Deer Creek, the
Orieatal mill and Murchie’s mill are lucatedAbove the former ‘is thé Buckeye” mine.—
The Oriental nil! Co.,F. Miller Superintendeat, is running an incline tor the purpose
of ‘prospecting this ledge. McLain touk
ruck out of the old’ tunuel from which he
worked $200 in » hand wortar.
The Dead Wood is owned by Foster, . ~
Parke: & Co. ‘This company have reachefi adepth of 50 ur 60 feet. They huiat by
hand and raise the waterby a sx inch
Hanebrow pump. They hove a large ledge
which they are working in two places. The
surface rock pays $53 per ton and is more
than paying the expenses of sinking the iu“cline. The Mouimeth, Federal Loan and
other companies above are running tunnels
and sinking shafts fur the purpose uf epening the, claims.. The rock crushed from all
these ledges paid. well.
There are few places in the: State where
ledges show finer proapects than those of
Willow. Valley. When-they are thorough.
lyopened'the gold yield of the county will
be turgely increased.

ELOPEMENT, Smash Up anv CapPrTure.
Acase occurred in this city on last Sunday
which fully illustrates the roughness of the
“course of true love.” It appears that a
colored man named George Waters, sged
about thirty. and Clarissa Buoth a sable lady
of abvut fourteen, determined to marry, and
being unable to obiwin the consent of “ye
stern parient,’’ made up their minds to elope.
Waters hired a team at Hunk Place’s stuble
on Sunday night, stating that he was bound
for Dutch Flat. He met the young-lady as
she was returning from Church with anoth‘er fellow, and she, to the astonishment of her
escort, juinped into the buggy and drove4
off. The affectiunute pair struck for the
State of Nevada where they hoped to be
“made one flesh;” but they bad not gone
‘amile before the axle of the vehicle broke,
and they were spilled out upon the ground,
the would-be groom very much bruised.—
They sent to town for another vehicle but
none could be obtained. They determined
still not to give up and made for the woods,
The father of the girl yesterday offered $75

were found in the grove near Sugar Loaf,
and thegirl brought back. The borseof the
officer who went to make the arrest was
frightened by a white man who took the
part of Waters. Theanimal threw bis rider and the friend threatened tu ‘blow the
top of his head off." The girl resisted desperately the-attempt-to tear her trem her
