Honor would lead a man who pry Se is imminent. has worked hard for the success of friends and failed, being fairly beaten, 6 aeqiiiesce in the result and heartily “gupport the successful competitor. CORHAM. STATE Womin ations. é i aeiaes the defeat of the Democracy. ‘(ay Te is reported that the Union prtamaries at San Francisco have been carried by Conness, his opponents refusing . to.go to the polls. It seems to us that the Union men in some parts of the They ‘do not begin until they are whip ‘ped. In other words they suffer prima. vies“ and conventions to be carried against them by neglecting to vote and then find fault with the conduct of their ‘opponents. It is a safe bet that ninetenths of the loyal men of this State are opposed to Conness for Senator and yet . by permitting him to carry conventiong ‘. by default they are pursuing the very . . course which must result in his return or secure the election of a Copperhead. FRANCE, during the last few years, has increased wonderfully in prosperity, and Napoleon, however may have been his rule for the rest of Europe, has done wonders for his 6wn country. In 1861 the imports ef France were $218,000,000 ; exports, $404,000." In 1865 the imports were $705,000,000 and the exports $817,400,000; showing an increase in fifteen years of over $1,000,000 in the total trade of the country. The produce of coal has been doubled, and the manufacture of cast and wrought iron trippled during the period. Railroads and telegraphs have proportionately increased. Since 1851, when teltt, . C&Taph messages numbered only 10,000, his Tt Grass Valley Union says : wards, an escape from the Marysville is such a policy that ever made the Democratic party so formidable, and _ such a course will make the Union party invincible. The man who cannot risé above self and his selfish prejudices, to contend for the broad principles _ of his party, is more an enemy to that than he who makes an open fight “against it. The open foe can be met, but the secret enemy, who silently in‘ sinuates his slanders, barbed with the venon of personal enmity, isan enemy ., that cannot be so easily combatted.— We liope that loyal men of Nevada county will rise above such acts as we have indicated, and leave it to the enemies ot the party to assail the Union nontinees. The time will come when they will regret their course, if persistedin. We have now # common foe in our front, and dissentions in our own ranks can only increase his chances.— This fact alone should lead us to pursue the right policy in regard to party and principle. Let loyal men, throughout the county digcountenanceall efforts to ¢reate disaffection in the party, and unite in a hearty support of the whole ticket. Even though there are men upon the State ticket who were not your preferences, you cannot deny them eupport without endangering your prin-ciples. The county ticket, no man can say ought against. The nominees are all of unquestioned loyalty, undoubted integrity and fully qualified for the places for which they are nominated. No better ticket was ever presented for the of the people of Nevada county. ‘Here at least all loyal men can. unite in a determined: fight, and we Pc Alc a _The party is they had increased in 1866 to 2,500,000, and the’charges had been reduced seventy per cent. letters transmitted through the post office was 65,000,000.
