THURSDAY, JULY 17, 1884. SS A New Yorx correspondent writes the Boston Herald, a nou-partisan paper, as follows: “We who mingle “with Democrats know that Blaine is . regarded ae a very formidable oppo‘nent, and thatthe ticket of Blaine and Logan is looked upon with a _ great deal of apprehension by Demoerats in whove hands the reinsof power rest, The opposition to Blaine began rather pronounzedly. ‘ It wad too virulent to last. Its very ; extravagance acted like a boomer‘ang. There is this to be said in fa“yor of Democratic possibility in New York State, mind you. [ believe ‘Blaine will carry New York State against any Democratic candidate that can be named, exeept Tilden, and I don’t feel confident that Tilden can carry the State against Blaine.” Mr. Crarues Rosse.1, who, since . the retirement of Benjamin hasmade 4 perbaps the largest income at the _ » English bar, received last year $75,000; Sie W. Gall, who tops the phyflicians, made $50,000; Mr. Millais stained canyas to a like figure; Archer, the jockey, made $43,000;Tennygon receives $26 aline; Ouida, $5,000 & novel; but in the race tor _ wealth, Simms, the dramatist of ‘‘In the Ranks,” a rank piece of stuff, ean look with contempt on his bafflud pursuers, having made last year $160,000. Iw Lancashire, England, they keep up the traditions of centuries on Easter Monday. In Preston, for in_ ‘stance, the whole population make a pilgrimage to the park outside of town, each with a hard-boiled egg dyed in some color, Everybody young or old, ynakes for the summit of a hill, down which the great sim is to roll the egg without getting it smashed. To see crowds of well dressed people rolling eggs against one another is a most amusing epectacle, Tue San Francisco Call gets in an incisive thrust in referring to one plank in the Democratic platform. It says: ‘‘The platform favors av American continental. policy, based upon more intimate commercial and politioal relations with the fifteen sister republics of North, Central and South America, but entangling alliances with none. This may be construed to meanthat we will let them help us, but we will not agree to help them.” hk Generat, McCixtian, Brayton Ives, John C. Barron, Oliver Sum ner, Tell and othershave united in a company to operate probably the largest cattle ranch in the world. It is in Grant county, N. M., and about forty miles from east to west and sixty from north to south, comprising abont 1,500,000 acres of grazing land, There are now some 16,000 head of cattle on the range and it is intended to increase the herds to 80,000 cattle. _e AN exchange truthfully says that Heury George wants a ‘distribution of the land,” so that every man can sit under his own vine and fig tree. After the land is divided and every man has his vine and fig tree to sit undet, the chances are ninety-nine in of the men who are clamoring for around a beer table. a nm Tue editor of the New > that city and State. New Youx—First National Bank. _ ‘. $a Francisco—First NationalGold Bank National Gold Bank of D gan St. Nazians is a curious community, Though founded as long sgo as 1849 its population is now but 212 made up of German Socialists and of German peasant women suffraists. The articles of associatioo— for the settlement is, in fact, but a society—provide for a board of seven trustees, consisting of priest, three men and three women, elected by all the adult men and women annually. Women vote there the same as the mev. German is the only language spoken, and only two, the general manager and the doctor, know English. They live entirely by themselves, and take no interest in the outside world, They are allagriculturists. The women work out in the field as well as the men, and by their industry have made a valuable estate of their possessions. ‘The people take a great many orphans, expecting to maintain the community in that way. They are very religious, and three times a day assemble in their chapel for prayer. Fashion's Sensible Decree. There was time, not long ago, when the elegant belle slept’ with greased hands in old gloves, and by day kept them carefully hidden from the sun, as a fashion writer puts it, ‘like mushrooms growing white in a cellar, so that they might look and feel as though they had never. come in contact with anything rougher than satin.” It-is wholly different now.’-Athletic sports are in high approval. The daughter of wealth grasps oars, tennis bats, bridle reins and tricycle handle bars, all without gloves; and sheis proud of the callous palins that ensae, and the redrosiness of thé knuckles that used to be the hue of the lily. Her liking for outdoor exercise has not yet taken her into the base ball field, where her fingers might get permanently disfigared by breakage, and so the hands are not becoming distorted, though they will never again be quite as small and soft as they were.
