Deal, '-. Por Treasurer, © For Supervisor, E. F. Spence. . . Jonathan Clark. Honest asp Comprvent.—If the bolters of this-county were desirous of securing omen to he county offices who were “honest and capable,” their action in withdraw‘ing from the’ Union party was without the shadow of excuse. We have no hesitancy in saying that the ticket nominated by the flag representatives of the Union party in Con“vention is as good as any ever, presented to sired to secure the welfare of the county by selecting more hénest and capable men than the Union nominees, they have utterly ‘failed. Let the people of the county examine -_ the two tickets, commencing with Seuator, and through to the end, and we have no doubt as to the conclusion. But no one believes that these men spéak the truth when they make such professions. It is well known. that the apre-head ticket is the offspring of a few defeated office hunters and their friends, who met in caucus in this city after the Union nominations were made, issued their call aad went themselves ot sent out their, agents into the lanes and by-ways to precure signers. Signatures were received irrespective of past political action, end in many instances men were informed that “if they were in favor of any of the six ‘articles of faith” they could sign the call -without endorsing the balance. Their mass ‘Convention which assembled as ‘the people,” did not aumber a hundred, including copperheads, and yet this number was too many for the managers, and a nominating ~~ —gommittee was selected to make up a ticket. The committee labored and the ticket was brought forth. The sore-heads who went to the polle and participated in the Union primaries, many. of them pledging their honor as men that they would abide the decision of the Convention, were placed upon that. ticket,, yet, with candidates having such an infamous record, these men prate about honesty. If broken pledges, violated consciences.and. base trickery are evidénces of honesty,or virtues that entitle . mén to serve the people, the bolter's ticket should be mentioned as a paragon of honesty. There are men among the. bolters who did not break the oath taken at the pri-. maries without the pangs of « violated conscience. We know of one of the leading then who told a friend, he would givea thousand dollars if he-had never taken the oath showing that he,realized to sone extent the binding foroe ot tiie vatln’ “ “ -s But even ifthe two tickets were composed of men equally henest and -capable, there would still be good reason for every loyal man in the county to stand by the Un}ion party and the Union ticket, We care not who the men are that encoutage and urge this division of Union strength, they are the: enemies of the party and are hawsard ing the welfare of the country. The Dewocrats are still united and are as strong today ae they were a year ago. ‘Every’ wa who encourages or sustains.the bolters is aiding copperheads and giving them encourage: ment to keep up their organization, and if the . bolters ure supported to“ any extent the Democrats will, in all probability, put forth 8 ticket and run. into ‘officecon acoount of the divisionin Uaion ranks, We deo not, fer any such restit here, fur it “this county sore-heade find but little encouragement, among Union men:: They” are determined: 'y of the-party and . tgvote for every nominee on their ticket ; ". beat sense, a sermon for the times, and fer Es SaxJuamy Jolng 18 : Its F vhgesd ib é i the “Ridge ,”” as itis ot not, ‘be deemed uninetresting to a readers of your paper, and so. thinking, allow me to furnish you-with a few items of general character......The bolters are malkiag all the capital they _ . possibly can, of course, for the “ring; streuk. . ed and speckled” ticket, which they have placed in the field; but I-am satisfied that: } alarge majority of the Union men of this . township will stand by the regularly nominated Union ticket; when the hour of trial comes. The leaders of the short-hair party will not themselves vote their own ticket straight through. Ehave, as hear of a solitary person, belonging to or claiming . any affinity with that n, who intends on the contrary; they will give our ticket a moiety ‘of support. ~The short-hair faction, mach to my surprise and pleasure, ate not as numerous as that brilliant (") luminary; the Gazette, would have the ple believe, at least sofar asthe “ o" approach, they will become “smaller by derees and beautifully less.” It is a heavy fond for these disorganizers to carry in hing forward the ambitious views of Gov. Pow What lias Low ever done for the eneral interest of the Uuion party of this State What ‘sacrifices hus he undergone iw the great efforts made within the last four years to keep our great State in line with those other noble! which followed the and kept step to the music of the Union, that he should be elevated to the high: position ofa seat in the. Senate of the United States? The. short-hair faction -does not ‘avow openly: that Gov. Low is their Sirst choice for U. 8. Senator; they know full well, that an avowal of that kin would annibilate the least vestige of success on their part, hence their. reticence, Our candidate is the Hon. A. A. Sargent. Upon him ‘we reet oar guage of battle, and + We rise on victorious wings, or fall beaten, We show our hands; let these gr emreny ng show theirs. Will they do it 1— doubt it, “Let the galled jade wince, our withers are unwrung. Put. our. township: down. certein for the Union ticket and re will find my prediction in September next all ¢. K. Work!—Mr. Editor :—I have a motion ence you are in the habit of addressing six mornings out of every seven ofthe week.— But, before doing 80, indulge me with a few words introductory and explanatory. How is it that, i r this city: with only two Protestant churches } open on Sabbath mornings, and, with the pulpits of those two, oceupied by,men of trained intelleet and confessed ability, the usual attendance is so limited? ‘It certainly cannot be from ‘any lack of general intelligence, for—and I speak } from pretty extended obsarvatiqn—few, very few, communities, corresponding in numbers, can anywhere be found embracing an equal amount of intelligence, or a. readier and juater appreciation uf what 18 rare and excellent in pablié men and public speech. I may be mistaken,:but I can’t help thinking One explanation is to be found in the fact that, stayers-at-home do not dream how — they are losing.’ Of one of our city clergymen, it-may, indeed, be said, that he iatoo. reeent for the public to know very much about him. But, whoever hvatd ‘him JastSabbath morningt must have been impressed with the conviction, that he. was listening ‘to nd ordinary sermon. The aubject, discussed, might be condensed into this!" The Duty and the Dignity of Labor"'—a, subjeet, which every body in California, except the “bummers,” is, practically, interested in. It was, in the the California meridian. As an-intellectual and scholarly prodaction, it wad replete with fresh, vigorous, compact thought, cluthed. in ‘words, clear and. forelble snd marshalled with 9, skill; whieh.evinged, on the pact of the speaker, not gnly mastery of his mother tongue, but keen discrimination and quick perception of the subtleties which enter into a atyle, at once. hatural,, simple, polished and pointed. White fully meeting the demands of the moat fastidious and cultivated, it. was, ‘also,.level. equally to the comprehension of the humblest.
