? S “~qniaeen this ridge’ begin q DULY TRANSCRIPT NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA. ‘Saturday, July 19th, ° ee ae te 2 ; Lk EEE cue. re ANEST AQUA. —— Along the Ditches and at the Great ‘Reservoirs from waich Nevada appeuses tts Temperate Wants. Chas. H. Shinn recently made a careful inspection of the sources fron which our miners and farmers derive water for various purposes, . ‘Tas results of his observations as written to the Bulletin, are synop-§sed-bilgw Just bafore reaching Eareka, that ‘isto say witliin three miles, the water ditches of three companies which to make % oar way masicaland full of sunlit flashes. There the ditches follow the curves of the hillside, one above another, and often not thirty feet apart, crossing the road dozens three of times, now violently, in swift eddies, now unbroken currents, agaia with a sudden descent as of a miniature cataract. ‘The middle ditch belougs to the Milton Company, who taw their supplies from the Eng~. i list reservoir and min3 at Freneh Corral, almost on the western end of this ridge. “The lower ditch belongs . ta the Eureka Lake Ditch Company, aul extends nearly. the whole length of tha ritige to Chgrokee and Columbia Hill. wheré “they own mines. They also own mining ground above Lake City, between there and North Bioomfell, and have many years of The lower ditch isowned by ths North : Bloomfield Minin Company, and comes™ from work before them. tacir main reservoirs above the Bowma dain, and also from lesser reservuirs in a region of lakes to the southeast. These three. ditches carry large and deép streams, and their cap icity increases each year. (ioing east from Kureka a roman* tic road is traversed until the Bow_ haan reservoir is reached. It covers -amountain valley, formerly owned by a Mr. Bowman, who hada ranch there, and astation’on the overland stage line. It was doubtless a beautiful and busy spot,in those old days, but now, with:a massive dam built across ths mouth of the Big Canon, the water has filled the valley so that the top of the old flag-staff at the old ‘station is only a few feet out of water, and the old Bowman house was .for so.ne time floating about in a lost aad forlorn sort of way. The ‘lake above the Bowman dam, known otherwiss asthe Biz Canou Raservoir, covers five hundred and 39 acres, and when full contains nine hundred _ thirty millions of cubic fees of water. It is 5,450 feet above the sea~ level: The dam which retains it is ninety-six feet high, built of granite blocks, faced with the utmost nicety, and not leaking a drop, so far as can be porceived, “The water which sup-, plies the ditch is drawn fromthe base, and rushes out. with enormous force, falling thirty feet down on the bed of the old stream, down which it flows a few hundred yards before it enters the ditch. This dain extends froma the left bank of the ravine to a bold island of granite some 500 feet ix height. pea and the right bank of the raving-is the waste wier, built of huge cedar logs bolted together and filled in with rock. When the reservoir is ouce full there isin good seasons a wastage here sufficient to supply quite a city, This season it is caleulated that the unused water. flowing over at thisone waste-wier is equal to more than 400,000 miner's inches. On the headwaters on Canon creek are, about Bowman's dam, Sawmill Flat, Faucherie Reservoir and Eureka Laky, the last two belonying t> the Kureka Lake Company. A _ few miles southeast, and discharging in diiferent directions, but still mainly: tributary to the Bloomfielkl Mining Compsiy, are a largo number of sina Lla<es, mostly natural reservoirs, but some made larger. by earth and rock: dains. “Lhe most important ~~ Jakes fn this group are Shotgun Lake; Middle Lake, of no particular merit; Crooked Like, bent like au clbow;,. and a empty Round. Lake, Islapd Lake, host of lesser onea:j These through the south fork of Cation creek. Ia close propinquity are the Lindsey Lakes, the Feeley Lakes, and the Culbertson Lakes, knotted together in little groups. The whole territory°eoverel by this lake region @s perhaps five miles square. Some @° these lakes will cover thirty acres, 1879. . Between this. island or } ‘pay to keep up these expensive diteh> The salient mountain peaks are Grouse-Ridge, Black Mountain, Faucherie Peak, Fall Creek Mountain, found by visitors, packed in ice, and carried in triumph to the valleys. Eureka Lake, the highest of this is 6,430 feet Meadow Lake, tiful sheet of water, above the sea level. fated and historic mining town of. Summit City of which let whomsocity flashed up in e pight and faded citement began,-and it “also faded. for crowds. If-ever the ores cau be SummitCity wall rise from its slumber. well-managed affair. The dam is im three parts, from rock’ point to rock point, and is 87 feet hight, massively built. ‘Phe reservoir covers a surface of four huadred acres, and contains about 276,000 miner’s inches of water, ; Weaver Lake is a sub-reservoir of this Milton Company. It lacks. the extensive. water-shed of the other reservoirs, but with a comparative ly small dam it would hold much of the surplus from the upper lakes. It was tapped by running a tunnel underneatlf, so drawing ‘the “water from tae lower point. Each. artificial reservoir is ghastly with black and dismal pines, once growing in the former valley, iow dead and raggedly defiant, with the ‘water standing from ten to-tifty feet.deep about them. One by one they rot slowly and fall, drifting about in company with hundreds of ‘others which form whole rafts, neccessitating a boom of logs chained together and ‘drawn in front-of: the river aud the dam. ‘On the whole, then, ‘here is-ag¥stem of enormous and constant expenditure, built upysivily by many years of labor, The reservoir system-of this section is worth a journey obmany miles’ to see. ‘The marvelous energy of the Saxon race is not so much shown when brawny men hold: fierce streams of water against three hundred -feet of cliff, tearing it down every moment, as here, where the ‘beginning is, here where the force which drives the hydraulic mines is pent up and eontrolled hy a -selitary gate-keeper, subject to the telephonic orders of the Superintendent, who may be miles distant. For:there .is an electric telephone in good working -or-: der extending the whole length of ‘the rislge from French Corral to the upper “reservoirs, with oflices at everyimportant mine aad town. Sometime this reservoir system -will. be worth keeping up, and_even enlarging, for the sake of irrigation in the feot-hills and valleys. . Itmay_not es and flumes when the miners’ day is done, but the Water, so precious in its food-producing power, can be allowed to follow the. natural channels until it reaches the foot-hills. Here is ond single cluster of reservoirs and lakes which waste half their water, and yet retain, through summer, an area of: nearly two thousand acres, -with a depth often ef more than ninety-feet. This -is July, and everything is overfléwing ! If, in spring floods, when the rivers are knucking loudly. at the gates of our lowland towns, either accident or carelessness should loosen these mighty wasteways and barriers, so as to add these accumulated floods also, there weuld be wild work thereafter where men toiled on slippery levees along our great river. No valley-dweller, unless he has visited this region can comprehend the vastness of the forces held.in leash here, the pent-up rivers, the walls’ of glistening granite, the invested ~ capatal, and the interlinking industries of a busy and healthful community. > : _Whe Third Best.
