The Alta says: For a dozen. years,
Nevada;has heen trying to annex a
part of California, but has failed to
get consent to take the coveted ter. .
ritory. ,As the mountain, will not go
to.Mohammed, why shogld not Mo,
hammed come to the mountain ? Or, . .
in other words, why should not
Nevada give up trying to annex California and beg to be annexed herself? The population of the Silver
State is only equal to that of Alameda county, though its area is more
than two-thirds as great as that of
California, Perhaps it will break
the spell of Nevada's ‘bad, luck to
unite her fortunes. with those of the
Golden State. Possibly her unsuccessful citizens wil ndét run away
after they have made their pile, if
they do not need to change their residence to claim. the honor of being
Califorvians. With the addition o!
Nevada, California would bs the
largest State in the Union, possessing the maguiticent. area of 269,000
square miles, That would lay ove:
Texas by nearly 4,000 square miles
and furnish us with a just pretext
for a new boast. It may not be_unworthy of notice, in this connection,
that, when the first Constitationa
Convention of California established
the boundaries, it was originally proposed to extend the eastern line to
the western boundary. of Utah thereby takihgin the whole of the presen:
State of Nevada. But vo railroads
or, telegraphs had been built in those
days, aud it, was thonght; that. thie
would make’ the new Stute too large
for convenience, as it certainly would
have done at that time. But with
tie facilitids of ‘communication, th.
moat distant parts of Nevada: are now
more accessible from. San Franciscu
than oir nearest’ mining counties
were in thé days of 49, nor would
it-causeany more inconvenience to
govern a Territory the size of Nevada aud Califovbia, auited, “than the
litter glone.” So, .if, Nevada wisher
to come uuder:California’s sheltering
wiog, she will find it hospitably exus tended, GR eR a Lz. 5.
