' Everybody is.in favor! 6f, a Yocal
The citizens ‘gf Nevada
county know that railroad communication would itisute the’xapid devel:
opment of the resourees of the county, enhance the Value of the ranch
and thines, and inerense the value of’
town lots in Grass Valley and Nevada considerably” These things ‘ire
evident from the effects of railroad
in other parts of the “county, ~The
testimony given by the agents of the
--Cenvtral Pacific Railroad: when~that
company asked a reduction of taxes,
shows that the cost of railroad building, even a broad gauge, is not so’
great an undertaking.as, most people
imagine, This testimony was given
by railroad biiilders and civil“engi
“neers ‘Of many years’ experience.
They say the best locomotives.in use
by the Central Pacific road can’ be
bought new for $9,000 each, in coin,.
and that the cost of all the materia!
used in the construction of the Central Pacific road, when new, does not
amount to more than $6,000 per
nile,
thirty miles, and the costof a narrow
gauge road is very much’ less’ than .
half the cost of a broad: ‘gauge: The
people of Placer county in the neighborhood of Auburn, and: the people
_ of Nevada county, could easily build
_@ Toad, commencing at’ Auburn and
running to Nevada, by Grass Valley.
We know that.men of capital stand
ready to put money into such a road,
but in order to. secure the’ road’ the
people of” the cotinty must 'co-operate, and every man who has town
property, or a mining claim, or a
ranch, should come forward, and by
subscriptions aid in the work. The
people of ordinary means must not
” be content to “advocate a toad and
-—_abuse-capitalists' who’ do’ Rot construct it. Every man who has apy.
~means should be willing to “put up"*
to the extent of his ability to aid in
any enterprise which will make bus-.
iness better, enhance his property
and enable him to domore business.
This a rajlroad will do. Auburn is
the point to which it shoulll run, because it is the best natural road, and . ~
also because the people of that place
will no doubt take stock enough to
bring the road to Bear river, the
boundary between the two counties.
Such: a-road-could_be eventualiy ex~ tended to connect with the system of
narrow gauge roads which ‘thé are
proposing™ to build: ‘from Saucelito
and Yolo to thé. Bay. ‘Nevada county will never grow'as tapidly as’ it
ought, natil we have @ railroad.
* Lecal “Hire vition.
A-gentleman fciding’s high State
office recently said ‘that his family
would reside in Nevada county and
this should be his home if we had a
railroad. Many persons desirous of"
living in a healthy climate would.
locate in Nevada’ county, if it were

tax to raise $2,000, for the purpose
of building a school house.
_~ The Congregational Sunday School
will meet at the Assembly Hall, of the
